Hobby Lobby to Defy Sotomayor Ruling on Morning-After Pill

An attorney for Hobby Lobby Stores said Thursday that the arts and crafts chain plans to defy a federal mandate requiring it to offer employees health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill, despite risking potential fines of up to $1.3 million per day.

Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel, which are owned by the same conservative Christian family, are suing to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills.

The companies claim the mandate violates the religious beliefs of their owners. They say the morning-after pill is tantamount to abortion because it can prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in a woman's womb.

On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied the companies' request for an injunction while their lawsuit is pending, saying the stores failed to satisfy the demanding legal standard for blocking the requirement on an emergency basis. She said the companies may still challenge the regulations in the lower courts.

Kyle Duncan, who is representing Hobby Lobby on behalf of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said in a statement posted on the group's website Thursday that Hobby Lobby doesn't intend to offer its employees insurance that would cover the drug while its lawsuit is pending.

"The company will continue to provide health insurance to all qualified employees," Duncan said. "To remain true to their faith, it is not their intention, as a company, to pay for abortion-inducing drugs."

In ruling against the companies last month, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton said churches and other religious organizations have been granted constitutional protection from the birth-control provisions but that "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."

Check out the ‘leather tools’ at Hobby Lobby. I’m sure you can find something that punches holes in leather, and it would work like a charm for the fleece to put a large enough hole in it to do a blanket stitch, or even a single or double crochet stitch.

It’ll be a shame if they close but the effect on the economy will be less than a blip. A new and similar hobby store chain will soon arise to fill the void, and Hobby Lobby will have accomplished nothing but its self-destruction. Capitalism, like nature, abhors a vacuum.

True, but the far more reaching and bell weather effect of this case rests with 1st Amendment rights. Obamacare has just unconstitutionally negated the 1A and the SCOTUS has folded on it again for the 2nd time. Congress will do NOTHING. Emperor Obama has spoken.

Wouldn’t be surprised if liberals Kagan and Bammy gave her “advice” on how to rule.

It ain't just Sotomayor and Kagan. The fact that Sotomayor and not the whole Supreme Court ruled on this, shows that her position is that of the majority — if conservatives on the Court had had the votes, they'd have granted cert. Heck, a minority of four can insist on cert if they want to make their point, so it may well be that justices on the side of Hobby Lobby numbered three or fewer.

And most people seem to be insensate zombies who don’t know or don’t care that their rights are being stripped away in methodical fashion.

I feel special because both of my grandsons love to go poking around interesting places with me though. Lots of grandkids don’t want to do much with their grandparents.

1. Place tea each white/black paint in separate bowls. Dilute with water droplets til consistency of heavy cream. 2. dab entire surface with sponge dipped in white gouache cream. 3. While still wet, use tissues to gently dab creating a mottled look. 4. W/ 2nd sponge, lightly and sparingly dab a few places with black gouache. 5. Use clean tissues to lighten and blur the black spots, creating the appearance of flaked mercury glass. 6. Let dry for at least 1 hour.

I have an eyelet punch and it would not go through the fleece. Just got a new skip stitch wheel for my old ‘pizza’ fabric cutter hoping it will do the job, although using the ‘pizza’ cutter is hard on my hands and back. My good cutter is a Martelli which moves like a mouse, but holes are different to attach blades.

Will look at HB next time I’m out that way. I do fancy stitches around mine especially for the girl grands and greats, guys get plainer as they would not like fancy as well.

I agree and share your alarm. However, the Court’s decision didn’t surprise me as we already had the precedent of the Civil Rights Act’s infringements on property rights/business owners’ free choices being ruled constitutional.
