Trailers/vans in the foreground containing supplies, parts, tools and offices for the contractors working on the boat. Tents in the background cover catapult 4 which is being worked on.
That is LHD-5, USS Bataan, not LHA-5, Peleliu. Peleliu is homeported in San Diego and also on deployment right now.
Thanks, that makes a lot more sense! I was confused by the number 3 on the superstructure of an identical vessel in the distance since the USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3)was sunk as target ship on 13 July 2006. That means the ones in the distance are the:
USS Wasp (LHD-1), Norfolk, Virginia
USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), Norfolk, Virginia
USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), Norfolk, Virginia
>> Stupidity in the high command.
Is the asshat still in HI?
The easiest way to differentiate between LHA-1 class and LHD is to look at the bows-the LHA has sponsons that originally had Mk45 5”/54 mounts on each side. The guns were removed in the late ‘90s. The LHD bow is square. Soon to be a moot point since as you noted, Peleliu is the last of her class. When LHA-6 is in service, the difference between the classes will be aft-no well deck in the new LHA so no stern gate.
If they are in Norfolk the ships stick out like a sore thumb from I-64. Not much way to hide them. The yards a ways up the river used to be a little bit more secure in that respect. They built the base and added the tunnel & interstate later. That and it's on the main river channel near the International Piers. {meaning foreign flagged freighters also pass by} I will say this closing down other assets and bringing them all to NOB and Norfolk is insanity.
There were only two operational carrier at Pearl in December 1941 -- Enterprise and Lexington.
A third, Saratoga, was still in San Diego after being refitted.
Enterprise's commander, Admiral "Bull" Halsey, seemed to suspect something was up, because he kept his men on high alert all the way to and from their mission to deliver aircraft to Wake Island.
Delayed by the same storm which hid Yamamoto's ships, Halsey arrived back at Pearl Harbor just a couple of hours too late.
Halsey launched aircraft to attack the Japanese, but had no effect on the overall battle.
The Enterprise's Task Force included eleven other US warships.
Lexington's Task Force 12, including three heavy cruisers and five destroyers, arrived near Midway Island on December 7, also on an aircraft delivery mission.
Its commander, Rear Admiral John Newton obviously had no clue of "something coming" because he did not order special alert or preparations for combat.
Immediately after the Japanese attack, Lexington was ordered home to Pearl Harbor.
The order to use carriers to deliver aircraft to Wake and Midway Islands came from Admiral Harold Stark in Washington.
In testimony to Congress Stark denied advanced knowledge of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
But they did expect a Japanese attack in the western Pacific (i.e., Philippines), and that likely explains why large US carrier task groups were ordered west to, in effect, protect America's flanks.
On that day to be remembered in infamy, all of the fighter planes were parked in circles, with noses pointed inward.

We seem to be the only ones thinking of Pearl Harbor ... doesn’t look like PH crossed the minds of anyone in charge at Norfolk, does it?
Or maybe this was at the direction of the marxist/muslim cabal.
