AFP - No one wanted to be president less than Mitt Romney, his son said in an interview out Sunday that raises new questions about the candidacy of the losing Republican nominee.
In an interview with the Boston Globe examining what went wrong with the Romney campaign, his eldest son Tagg explains that his father had been a reluctant candidate from the start.
After failing to win the 2008 Republican nomination, Romney told his family he would not run again and had to be persuaded to enter the 2012 White House race by his wife Ann and son Tagg.
"He wanted to be president less than anyone I've met in my life. He had no desire... to run," Tagg Romney said. "If he could have found someone else to take his place... he would have been ecstatic to step aside."
Mitt Romney "is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them. He loves his country, but he doesn't love the attention," his son said.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and multi-billionaire businessman, has been widely criticized for blaming his loss in the November 6 election on President Barack Obama's "gifts" to Latinos, women and the poor.
"What the president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote," Romney said during a call with campaign donors in mid-November that represented his first public reaction to his election loss.
The Globe story sought to look beyond that narrative and examine what really went wrong.
It focused on the fact that Romney was unhappy that one of his most trusted advisers, Mike Murphy -- the architect of his successful 2002 run for governor

That makes 2 of us.
BS.
Say what we will about Romney’s campaign tactics and strategies, but I had no doubt the man wanted to win. I attended two of his rallies here in Virginia and saw the energy close up.
I don’t think that’s what was meant. He didn’t want to run, but he didn’t shrink from trying to win once he did run.
His campaign was very different than McCain, who purposely tried to lose.
Typical sore loser crap.
[Romney] wanted it but never wanted it enough. Romney and McCain wasted everyones time.
Romney wanted Newt to lose more than Romney wanted to be president.
My Comments:
Astonishing how many of the best or GOP front-running candidates (or front-running "non-candidates") in 2008 and 2012 didn't want to be in the race at all.
The true libertarian (small "L") is a lover of freedom and not inclined towards politics or government which is one reason why the Left seems politically to always have the upper hand - they are the party of government and politics.
The true Right wants to be in politics and government to work themselves (and others) out of their governmental jobs. But who wants to work themselves out of their job? Not many, which is why the Reagans of this world are so few and far between. We certainly need one now more than ever.
The opposite, of course, is true with the Socialist Bureaucracy, which lives (taxes and spends) for the perpetuation and growth of its own existence and to #%$^&*!! with those from whom they commit legalized larceny in order to perpetuate their existence and growth. That's why tyranny is tends to be short lived - it dries up and kills the source of their funding.
Liberals’black propaganda.
I agree. McCain was wayyyyyy too impressed with Obama to mount an effective campaign against him.
He ran hard enough against Republicans, then sat on his ass for Obama.
“He ran hard enough against Republicans, then sat on his ass for Obama.”
Yep. He ran out the clock in the fourth quarter, never mentioning Benghazi in the foreign policy debate.
He’s a “multi-Billionaire” now? Wow, he makes money fast!
LOL
Yeah.
Sure.
Right, Tagg.
Mitt only spent the last 8 years not running for the presidency.

Tagg needs to heed the 15-minutes of fame rule and step off the stage now.
Liberal media just makes such report for fun and tries to make conservatives look like sore losers.
Romney is a partner of Soros, and you all bought the
KoolAide to the detriment of the USA.
Romney’s ONLY goals were to eliminate real conservatives
and make a few hundred million $$$$ (and same for Rove).
America will NEVER be the same again, because of Romney who
attacked Gov. Palin and THREW election 2008 through
his surrogates.
NEVER.
Unlike his nomination campaign, Romney ran his POTUS campaign like someone who didn’t want to win - it was weak and sad.
But during the campaign, Anne Romney talked about how Mitt asked her about running and she said something like can it be fixed or can you fix it? He said yes and, according to her, she said, well run then. Clearly she made it seem like he asked her permission.
Romney ran and didn’t want to, I voted for him and didn’t want to. Of course I had other candidates in the primaries but once he had the nomination I supported him completely. My reason for not wanting to vote for him may be as off kilter as I am. Washington politics is a cesspool and Mitt is a nice guy. Story after story of Mitt’s good deeds throughout his life proved what a nice guy he is and I hated the thought of sending such a person into the $h!th@le that is DC. I doubt there is anyone that could go into that hell and not come out corrupted.

Republicans helped Obama with that every time they took the “moderate,” “middle ground” position for fear of being labeled extreme.
