The chemical warfare threat looming over Syrias civil war and its neighbors has taken an epic turn with the announcement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Saturday, Dec. 22, that the Syrian government has consolidated its chemical weapons in one or two locations amid a rebel onslaught and they are under control for the time being.
He added that Russia, which has military advisers training Syrias military, has kept close watch over its chemical arsenal.
Debkafiles military and intelligence sources report: The Russian foreign ministers statement was a message to Washington that the transfer of Syrias weapons of mass destruction to one or two protected sites was under Russian control. This had removed the danger of them falling into the hands of the al Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra ,which had come ominously close Friday, Dec. 21, when the Islamists spearheaded a Syrian rebel assault for the capture of the al-Safira military complex and Bashar Assads chemical and biological stores.
Lavrov did not go into detail about how this arsenal was removed and to which locations. But his reference to Russian military advisers training Syrias military clearly indicated that Russian forces were directly involved in removing the WMD out of the reach of the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists.
His assertion that they were under control indicated that Russia was also involved in safeguarding them.

Instead Russia fills the void.
Now on to the black market where Russia can sell them to the highest bidder.
...and I don’t imagine jughead is going to want to drop bombs on Russian troops. That could make things quite messy.
It’s Russia’s ally.......we have no say in Syria
Politics never likes a vacuum—If we will not step up—others will. But, is this a good thing? Is it a good thing that Putin’s Russia has this sort of power? What will they try next? What if the rebels we back start killing Russians? Might they send troops? This could get real ugly, real fast. Still, this move might have saved a bunch of people’s lives.
Didn’t they also move the WMDs out of Iraq to the Bekaa Valley and Syria, back in early ‘03, before we invaded in March?
Debka.
Just saying.
Or is that what the Russians don't want us to see.
At least Russian leadership has the balls to make the call.
“Its Russias ally.......we have no say in Syria.”
Exactly. Russians may have their faults, but they are not nuts. I’d much rather Russia take control of Syria’s WMD than, say, China.
Got it.
Why don’t I feel any better about where those weapons will end up? Oh, that’s right, it’s the Russians and their propensity for selling everything on the black market.
Now I remember . . .
Why would Obama do that after he has gone to so much trouble to transfer some of them from Libya to the rebel Islamists fighting Assad?
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!
Debkafile?
Based on their track record, you might as well make up your own story.
Obama’s not going to clean up his own mess. His ego won’t let him even acknowlege he made it.
Probably not.
Russia knows that they might end up being used in Moscow instead of anywhere else.
