White House weighs smaller fiscal cliff package
politico ^ | 12/21/12 | CARRIE BUDOFF BROWN and JAKE SHERMAN

So the White House is turning its focus to a smaller package that would extend the Bush-era tax rates on income below $250,000, pause the across-the-board spending cuts known as the sequester and renew unemployment insurance benefits, according to senior administration officials.

It would hold off a significant portion of the fiscal cliff, minimizing any economic shock in the new year. But it means a host of tax provisions would likely expire, little would be done to address the debt and deficit, and no process would be set up for overhauling the tax code next year. There would be no agreement on entitlements, and none on raising the debt ceiling.

Increased taxes. No spending cuts. This is what Obama wanted all along. I am not sure why I worry so much about the debt since I have given up on this once great country. These young people that voted for Obama will have to deal with it after I am gone.

Amen. I am all in favor of going over the the cliff, but last night was the wrong way to set it up.

This GOP bunch has managed to transform the Bush tax cuts into the Obama middle class tax cuts, and the GOP will be forced in January to go along.

Flame away, but Boehner was right yesterday, not the rebels... At least on the politics if not the economics.

Funny, last night you were calling them "the far right GOP", now they're rebels?

Did it ever occur to you that these "rebels" are doing what their constituents elected theme to do? You know, Taxed Enough Already!

Rebel is a term of endearment, but I am still not happy with outcome of last night.

I’ve been on FR since Cajun Girl and I were determined to get Eric Holder out of the Justice Dept when he was a temporary holdover after Bush was inaugurated in 2001 (ashcroft had not yet been confirmed).

This is just a difference of the means to an end.

Merry Christmas, LV Ron. Let us hope 2013 serves our nation better than I anticipate because this Admin are corrupt Chicago street thugs.

How about higher taxes and more spending?

No?

Ok. How about more spending and higher taxes?

No? Ok. A compromise. We’ll raise taxes AND continue spending.

Obama wants the “Cliff” effect to occur. The after all the taxes kick in and the pain begins to hit home he can jump in like a knight in shining armour and propose a “Tax Break” for the poor downtrodden middle class. The Republicans won’t be able to say no and they will then cease to be viable even as a memory of what this nation was before the Marxists took it over. The cry will be, “Obama, President for Life.” Sieg Heil!

Advice for Boehner:

Keep your mouth shut for a full week until after Christmas.

After that, state, “The House has passed a budget and it is over at the Senate. We will pass the Mack Penny Plan which will balance the budget in 8 years or less. We will then adjourn until the White House and the Senate pass a budget, and we WILL NOT raise the debt ceiling.”

After that, at every question and every opportunity, state the above. If the Dinosaur Media and their party, the Democrats, say to any variation of “You are willing to shut down the government and let old people and children die.”, answer, “We have passed a serious budget. It is the WH and Harry Reid who are letting them die.” “for two years?” “YES- it is past time to save our country from bankrupcy.” Anything that tempts any different answers, get off the podium and off the stage.

Long about February, the dogs will come crawling back to the House.

Sad... this is what ought to have occurred last summer and before.

The GOP and conservatives will get blamed for “everything negative”, no matter what happens! The GOP should of walked away weeks ago, while, fully, explaining why they did so! Way too many within the “Stupid Party” continue to fall into the trap created by BO and the left.

Boehner’s strategy in this debate and last years is abhorrent. The absolute worst political leadership I have ever seen at any level. He negotiates against himself. He uses the wrong tactics to debate and to communicate to the public. Last night is 100% on his shoulders. He created the same situation that bit us in the ass in 2011. He twists conservatives to vote for things against their core principles before getting agreement from the Dems. Then, he further negotiates with the compromise bill as our starting point, with huge of concessions made and comes back to twist more arms to force votes on a worse bill later leveraging the earlier votes.

Our side does ALL the compromise and then gets blamed for being unreasonable. The GOP took far more flack in the 90s, pushed through get bills and reforms...with little to no electin losses...and a residential win in the next election in 2000..

The House should pass nothing promoted by the administration. Every Republican Representative should send a letter to their constituents. Tell them that elections have consequences, and that THEY elected Democrat Senators and Obama. Now their taxes are going up. If they want lower taxes and reduced spending they must get rid of the party of tax and spend.
