PHOENIX - Officials in the U.S. say detectives have arrested a 16-year-old female student and foiled an Arizona school shooting plot with the help of Toronto police.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the girl's threat was posted on a YouTube channel owned by a transgender community in Toronto.
The owner of the channel contacted Toronto police who then tracked down the teen who had plans to gun down her schoolmates at Red Mountain High and kill herself.
According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, U.S. detectives acted within hours of being alerted by officers in Toronto on Wednesday and visited the girl's home in Mesa, Ariz., some 32 kilometres from Phoenix.
Police say the girl was arrested after she admitted posting the threat.
They say the teen told officers she planned the attack well ahead of last Friday's school massacre in Connecticut, where 20 young children and six adults died in a shooting rampage.
Police say they found three handguns at the teen's home, but the weapons were released to the girl's father for safe keeping.
They said the girl's parents both told detectives that their daughter had a history of mental health issues, had been seen by a psychiatrist, and had recently been asking about where the guns were kept in the house.
The teen is being detained at a juvenile facility and is facing charges of one count of computer tampering and one count of threatening and intimidating.
"We were very fortunate on this occasion to prevent another possible mass tragedy," Arpaio said in a statement. "It takes more than just law enforcement though. We need the active co-operation of parents, members of the community, and friends and neighbours to effectively stop these potential disasters before they happen."

If she had actually committed the shooting, she would have been described as a heterosexual, Bible-worshiping, prepper, right?

Sheriff Joe acted quickly, while officials in Massachusetts simply wrung their hands and said: “We have to wait until a crime is committed”. Even if the crimes charged in Arizona don’t hold up in court, lives were saved, including the girl. Now all we have to do is wait for the lawsuit from the ACLU.......

That high school is very close to home...very close. Thank goodness our Sheriff was quick to react. Local talk radio discussing it now.
Many here may have issues with the transgender community or whatever they call themselves but props to the alert individual who notified the police. Arpaio acted well but without the notification he would have simply watched it happen
I also wish we, here in Ohio, had no idea what that a-hole's name was that shot those people. Nothing but high publicity over this tragedy, but nothing for the 3,300 innocents ruthlessly slaughtered every day .

They’re just encouraging more shooters by giving this guy publicity. Maybe we should pass a “school shooting privacy” law or something, so that the press can’t release any details about the suspect. No promise of fame, and fewer of these crazies will go on a rampage.

I read this as, “she” is probably a he. “She” posted the message to a transgender owned channel on YouTube because “she” is transgendered.
That would explain “her” mental health issues.

About 30 years ago a man named Billy Ferry killed and maimed 30 people standing in lines at a crowded Win-Dixie in Tampa. He brought in a bucket of gasoline and threw it over them and lit a match. It was horrendous. His family had warned police for years that he was crazy and violent and begged for state help. They couldn’t afford to put him away themselves. The state, county and city had turned them down because they couldn’t afford to keep somebody who was essentially insane locked up for the rest of his life. It wasn’t until 30 people were killed and maimed that they did anything.
So, yes, they’ll give her a bottle of Damitol and let her go under her parent’s care. If her parents are really amazing then she may get better. But my guess is that they aren’t or they’d have picked up some clue before now that this was in the wind.
Considering the site she posted on, and the sheriff, it likely will be marginalized.
