Is it time for a third party? There are a lot of unhappy people in this country who want little part of the Obama Revolution, whatever that is. The Republican Party is squandering an opportunity here. If it doesn’t voice that discontent, is it time for a third party?

But, to be historically precise, the GOP was not put here to cut taxes. From infancy in the 1850s, its mission was to halt the spread of slavery.
Taxes ARE slavery. If you work for someone and he takes all you produce you are his SLAVE. If he takes half of what you produce, you are his SLAVE. If he takes anything of yours that you produce you are to that extent his SLAVE. You may not be Mandingo but you are working for the Massa nonetheless.

Richard Nixon followed suit. Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, aid to education, the Peace Corps, the arts and humanities endowments, all of the Great Society programs grew -- with Nixon adding OSHA, EPA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Cancer Institute. Interestingly, Buchanan served in the Nixon Administration.

The point is not lower taxes.
The point is limited government. The GOP has given up trying to explain or defend limited government as a principle, and has turned instead to fiddling with tax rates as shorthand for limiting government.
It doesn’t work, because whatever the tax rates, they never actually limit the government’s reach, they only vary the amount of the deficit. And no one is inspired by an argument about tax rates. So the GOP winds up looking like a bunch of bean-counters instead of the party of liberty.
Until the party makes a real commitment to the country’s founding principles, which is liberty and limited government, they do little more than enact the DNC’s agenda at a small discount, and slow marginally the rate of economic collapse, and then take the blame for it.

The GOP is protestant politics.
Democrats are Catholic politics.
Others just join in from time to time, switching sides conveniently.
