The point is not lower taxes.
The point is limited government. The GOP has given up trying to explain or defend limited government as a principle, and has turned instead to fiddling with tax rates as shorthand for limiting government.
It doesn’t work, because whatever the tax rates, they never actually limit the government’s reach, they only vary the amount of the deficit. And no one is inspired by an argument about tax rates. So the GOP winds up looking like a bunch of bean-counters instead of the party of liberty.
Until the party makes a real commitment to the country’s founding principles, which is liberty and limited government, they do little more than enact the DNC’s agenda at a small discount, and slow marginally the rate of economic collapse, and then take the blame for it.
Government should be right sized. During war, economic recession, or disasters, the size of government grows. The way to curtail the growth of government is to skip the elective wars, stop jobs from being exported and prevent disasters. During the good times government should be reduced. Bring on the good times.
