At the police station, dispatchers began to take calls from inside the school. Authorities say the first emergency call about the shooting came in at "approximately" 9:30 a.m.
"Sandy Hook school. Caller is indicating she thinks someone is shooting in the building," a dispatcher told fire and medical personnel, according to 911 tapes.
Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls.
Police report that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at any point.
The gunman took his own life, police said. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached, officials said.

20 minutes? Not bad for a town about 1 square mile.
7 to 8 minutes... makes more sense.
Obviously not a 20 minute response time, just an inaccurate news story.
CNN can’t get their facts straight even now.

This just in?
Well I looked up the town and they have a police dept. I live ina town that size there is NO reason that the police should have taken more than 5 min to respond, of course calls should have been made to 911 when the door was being shot out.
I live in a small town in Wisconsin and I once called the county sheriff’s office (NOT 911) about minor vandalism that had occurred the night before. Two officers arrived in less than 20 minutes for my non-emergency call!
I agree. 20 minutes is obscene. (assuming that is correctly reported by CNN)
Yesterday, 300,000,000 Americans didn’t go into a school and shoot children. To understand why something happens, it is sometimes useful to look at why it doesn’t happen all the time.
Good for you Cajun!
damn.. just damn...
that is an epic failure on the part of the police.
I had a rather harsh back and forth with our school district on how they where going to prevent this from happening at my kids school.
It basically ended with “for what I pay for the school I expect more than a sign to stop killers from killing my kids”
The are to busy teaching your kids to get along and respect other cultures so if they have to re-allocate funds they will first gut more academic budgets before the PC brainwashing ones.
TWENTY MINUTES???????AFTER THE FIRST CALL. That is a terrible response time. Let’s hope the investigators find out what took so long. Were first responders hesitant to enter the building because shots were being fired? Were they waiting for a swat team to arrive?
The last resource I am going to trust to tell me what happened on that day is CNN.
Don’t say officer down. Say “I think they shot an officer”
If you flat out say they shot one they have you on lying to the police.
But hey, I’d take that charge if it got um there quicker.
Very Good Point!
