Adam Lanza, the shooter who massacred 20 children and six adults last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School, spent hours in the windowless basement of his home playing violent video games like "Call of Duty" and obsessing over "guns and military equipment."
Peter Wlasuk, a plumber who worked at the Lanza home, told The Sun that Lanza "lived in the basement" and he found it "strange."
"He had a proper set up down there — computers, a bathroom, bed and desk and a TV," Wlasuk said. "There were no windows.”
Wlasuk said he went down to the basement on numerous occasions while doing work at Lanza's home and said Lanza also had a "huge poster with every tank ever made" and another one with "every piece of military equipment the U.S. ever made." He said the Lanza brothers could tell "you about guns they had never seen from the 40s, 50s and 60s."
Lanza was suspected of being mentally ill and may have had Asperger's. His high school assigned him to a counselor because they feared he may harm himself but not others.
According to reports, Lanza's mother was a "a gun enthusiast who owned at least five weapons" and "took her younger son to a local firing range just days before the rampage."
A family friend told NBC that Lanza's mother said she wanted to introduce Adam to guns to teach him a "sense of responsibility."
“Guns require a lot of respect and she really tried to instill that," the friend said. "And he took to it. He loved being careful with them. He made it a source of pride.”

An operable window that can be opened and closed, large enough for a human being to pass through qualifies as an egress window.
I think the plumber was painting a little bit more of a creepy picture than reality. There was an exterior door, window or both. He jsut didn’t see them.

Those who blame video games are no better, nor more wise, than those who blame guns.
I’ve seen people get more angry and psychotic playing tennis than playing video games.... In fact, I’ve seen actual violence resulting from tennis matches.
Heck, I’ve seen more violent behavior resulting from a single game of Monopoly than video games. And that’s a fact.
...I’ve seen marriages dissolve over Monopoly... Geez...
I also built models of fighter planes, battleships, etc...and I even had a number of toy guns in my younger days.
When this happened, all I could think of was, this could easily have been my son.
Over the past few days, I have felt a lot better about this choice. when he called me last night, like he does every Monday night, he all but thanked me for putting him in the “School”. He is a few weeks shy of 18, and is in a secure residential setting, with others like him.
Look how many people were saved by the hours he spent gaming instead of murdering.
You must have been heartbroken, but you put your son's best interests first.
If more people made that kind of sacrifice, a lot of damage to civil society could be spared.
I agree. My SIL is an adult slow learner who also has mental illness. We had to jump thru hoops to get guardianship and prove she was not capable of caring for herself. Lanza sounds as if he was high functioning (took college courses, drove a car), it would have been very difficult for a parent to get a judge to declare him as an adult incapable of taking care of himself.
The Japanese culture of gaming often focuses on samurai and ninjas. Games like Assassin’s Creed have also been cited as “reasons for violence,” but in this case, the violent acts are committed with swords. I doubt the kid got anything out of the games but some odd sense of satisfaction slicing through throngs of warriors.

Yes. The void inside the killer must be filled and the blood lust has to be satiated one way or the other.
The video game(s) probably saved lives for a long period of time.
Look up serial killers that take long periods of time off and you will find that they found alternative outlets.

FWIW, Adam Lanza has not been referred to on-air or in print as the “alleged” shooter. I have noticed that this word was applied to Ryan Lanza at first, or later to his deceased brother Adam Lanza. And I’ve been listening for the word...”alleged”.
