Newtown Shooter Had Asperger Syndrome, And Some US Gun Facts
Zero Hedge ^

Posted on 12/15/2012 9:39:53 AM PST by Perdogg

As we reported last night, buried inside the NYT biopic of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza was arguably one of the most important missing pieces in the story, at least so far, which could provide clues into partially explaining yesterday's tragic loss of young life, namely that the 20 year old man suffered from Asperger Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism (two conditions which are being merged in the upcoming update of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) manual of mental disorders), which has been traditionally associated with social communication difficulties, including flat affect, and one which in some clinical studies has been shown to have a causal link to violence. In other words, in addition to the surge in the debate over national gun control and access limitations (ignoring that the perpetrator of the biggest school mass murder in US history - the Bath School disaster - used openly purchased dynamite and no guns, also ignoring that in the US there are roughly 300 million firearms), perhaps there should also be a broad discussion as to the risks of social misadoption of children with autism and other social and behavioral disorders.

I have never seen trash talking at a gun range for the most part.
Good natured joking and competitiveness surely happens

On the rare occasion that we get a jackass they get corrected quickly and all is well in the world.

I have no faith in the effectiveness in the vast majority of the psyciatric profession.

As I wrote on this thread or another about this topic - it starts and ends with family.

You could just as easily say I have no faith in the education system - the criminal justice system - the emergency management system. While not true in all cases, the majority of mentally ill can survive and even thrive in a loving family and environment. Our culture has devolved into putting our responsibilities onto the government, or health care, or pharmacists, or schools, etc etc.

My family were simple country folk who took care of their own and did not rely on others. That applied to mentally ill relatives too. I am not saying to avoid using tools or there are not situations that require much more - but in many instances genuine love and family care can overcome what pills and government agencies/schools can’t.

You are so quick to judge this person a monster, Something your religion forbids you to do by the way.

It's always amusing when atheists, liberals and muzzies attempt to lecture to Christians. The Bible does not forbid judgement. It cautions against it. It also encourages Christians to exercise some judgement "“Mtt 18. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 “So then, you will 1know them by their fruits."

Aspergers means very blunt, sometimes inappropriate speech, inability to grasp certain forms of humor (sarcasm in particular), general social awkwardness and a rather emotionless, flat effect most of the time, punctuated by occasional outbursts of frustration verging upon rage. The syndrome is often associated with fairly high intelligence, typically limited to a narrow area of specialization. High function autistic with elements of the savant.

Sounds like your average poster to internet forums and blogs, to me. Half the replies on a given FR thread would qualify, lol.

Such individuals would have been classified as merely eccentric in the past, before medical psychiatry became the automatic band-aid for any sort of deviance from the presumed behavioral norm.

It seems as if the occasional outbursts associated with the syndrome just build up steam in drugged individuals, leading to sometimes dangerously exaggerated episodes when the dam finally breaks.

Medicating such individuals needs serious examination and reconsideration, imho.

That would be excellent! An aspie parent could truly understand some of their needs first hand. I had to trust and respect. My belief that Gd makes everyone in His image helped me.

Agree. Gd is there to help us and provide answers in the rom of science, love, etc. you don’t need to be godless to help people with mental illnesses. Gd wants us to help each other. But we can’t blame mental illness on the devil.

Oh,there is definitely a group of symptoms that make the syndrome that is asperger’s. it exists, though many people with it may be professionally successful. And of course, raised in a loving accepting family, people with asperger’s wouldn’t hurt a fly.

But in certain families neurotypical kids become monsters. And I believe you could easier make a monster out of someone with asperger’s. they need modeled love MORE than the highly socially attuned.

Ah, but this is our girl’s once a month night out and we are all very good friends. Of course, in traditional southern style we begin all the sentences with, “Well, bless your (or her) heart...”

I've been off this board for a number of years, but I need to respond to this:

You do not know that the shooter wasn’t schizophrenia. That is a disease that comes on suddenly in the early 20s. He may not have been diagnosed, but we’ll never know.

If his brain is autopsied they will. The cells in the brain message centers of schizophrenics are disordered. In normal brains, they go the same direction in a line. At least, when I did a lot of research on the disease years ago, that was the case. I can't imagine it's changed. Whichever mental illness or disorder this young man had was definitely NOT under control. I do hope a national discussion on mental illness will result from this incident, but I'm not holding my breath.

As I understand it, there is also shrinkage in parts of the brain of a schitzophrenic. That being said, there are people who are “off” and there are people who are evil. This guy, whether “off” or not, must be evil to have gone after the children.

“Try putting your snakes down and doing a little reading. Then we can talk.”

Every time I put the snakes down to try and “do a little reading”, they all start crawling away. So I drop the book and collect all the snakes. /sarc

Reading? Where should I start?

Kipling?

Hayakawa?

Shute?

Deming?

Dobson?

Swindoll?

Stanley?

Or would you prefer Jung or Skinner?
