Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) called for the over-the-counter sale of birth control pills in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Friday, saying that the federal government had no business restricting access to the medication.

“Democrats have wrongly accused Republicans of being against birth control and against allowing people to use it. That's hogwash. But Republicans do want to protect those who have religious beliefs that are opposed to contraception,” Jindal wrote. …

In general medication is moved to non-prescription if there is little risk to it and it has little risk of recreational abuse. I know that there is a risk of blood clotting with birth control pills, but I don't know how high that risk is compared to side effects of other medications that have been made over the counter recently.

I can’t believe it’s that high a risk. How many of us use BCP yet how many women do you know that’ve had clotting trouble?

Frankly I’ve always had a problem with insurance paying for something that IS NOT a health issue. Trying not to get pregnant is not necessary for your health. Neither is anything for erectile dysfunction, nor even obstetrics. These are not real medical issues important to one’s life.

If you believe the Church should prevent others from using medical advances the Church does not believe in, you will turn people with a positive view of the Church into enemies of the Church.

Aw, surely we can find some penumbra that gives the fedguv the power to require prescriptions for birth control.

The WHO - World Health Organization - classifies oral contraceptives as Class 1 carcinogens, just like asbestos, arsenic, formaldehyde, plutonium, et al. Read the warning notice that comes with the pill. Users run a higher risk of stroke, heart attack, cancer, blood clots and hypertension. Just the things one wants to subject the woman they “love” to.

There are sufficient risks in it’s use to ensure that birth control should only be dispensed by a physician.

Nothing to do with Catholicism, everything to do with the health and welfare of women using it.

So Dems Can’t “Demagogue the Issue.”

What the hell, why don't we ask for a total ban on weapons of any type so the Dems can't “Demagogue the Issue”?

What a warped reason to do ANYthing.

You're going to criticize me for my position, so I will change my position to something you will like so you can't criticize me.

That, Governor, is exact reason demagogues demagogue!

You do what they want, you lose. I can't see you ever being president with your naive nature. What of your principles are you willing to change to prevent demagoguery?

Users of MOST pills run a higher risk of this and that. They are required to note almost anything that may have happened to anyone. You should know that being conservative that we have a lot of scare tactics going on by the ninny FDA. I’m very aware of all the warnings for myriad drugs given I’ve been suffering chronic conditions for many years now.

Clotting is THE prime risk with modern BCP; cancer was a bigger problem when they 1st came out.

Actually Dems won’t like it because it would be dropped from insurance. Which it should be anyway, since it has nothing to do with making a person healthier.

Nonsense. Many OTC drugs have risks and are used regularly by some people, and they were once prescription.

I agree, JC. If oral contraceptives should be sold OTC, so should at least half of our prescription drugs.

Strange thing for Jindal to claim expertise in.

And when a 12 year old dies of blood clots I suppose the media will cover it. No, it should remain issued by a physician only.
