House conservatives believe there is no good proposal put forth by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) or President Obama to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” and blame for the current Republican position “rests squarely” on Boehner’s shoulders.

“Let’s do something that’s real unusual in this town. Let’s talk about accountability. I don’t care whoever you are. The position the speaker’s in right now—if there’s any blame to be placed, it’s squarely on his shoulders,” said Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.). …

I do not know what kind of "blame" they are talking about. The "fiscal cliff" is owned by the "tax and spend" Democrats. The Democrats exist to increase taxes (like a fish loves water), and then blame the Republicans.

If the Republicans agree to raise taxes, then there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats in my opinion. When the Republicans in Virginia raised taxes, I moved to "Independent" status; saves me money.

Yet who is electing Boehner to be Speaker again?

The blame is not on one sholder, there is plenty to go around, but of course the major burden is on the Speaker, and he is a major part of the problem.

There was a glimmer of hope this am. I was watching CNBC and Cramer said he could detect a shifting of blame to Obama for failing to negotiate in good faith.

OK, I'm a realist and don't expect this to really happen because the MSM is protecting the worst president ever in the history of the US but to blame this all on Boehner is a lie.

The blame for the fiscal cliff lies with the republican house which passed two bills, the democratic senate which passed two bills, and President Obama who signed two bills.

The first bill was a tax bill, which extended the Bush tax cuts for two years, and scheduled them to expire in January of 2013.

A majority of both republicans and democrats voted for this bill: “On December 15, the Senate passed the compromise package with an 81–19 vote, with large majorities of both Democrats and Republicans supporting it.[32] Near midnight of December 16, the House passed it 277–148, with it getting only a modest majority among Democrats and a large majority among Republicans (of the 148 votes against the bill in the House, 112 were cast by Democrats and only 36 by Republicans)”

The second bill was a debt ceiling bill, which increased the debt ceiling, in exchange for mandatory 10% cuts in spending equally spread between non-defense and defense spending.

A majority of republicans supported this in the house and senate. Democrats tied in the house, and a majority voted yes in the senate:
“The House passed the Budget Control Act[1] on August 1, 2011 by a vote of 269–161. 174 Republicans and 95 Democrats voted for it, while 66 Republicans and 95 Democrats voted against it.[14]” “The Senate passed the Act on August 2, 2011 by a vote of 74–26. 6 Democrats and 19 Republicans voted against it.”

President Obama signed both bills.

So, that is who is to blame for the fiscal cliff. It is the result of bills supported and passed by both parties, and signed by the current President.

Sure, NOW they say it is horrible, and must be changed. If so, why did they pass these bills in the first place? Stop passing things that are bad for America. This isn’t a natural disaster, it is an INTENDED result of legislation.

A majority of republicans voted for both these bills in both the house and senate.

The blame here is that the republican leader is responsible for presenting the republican plan, and there is no republican plan.

If you are going to say that the democrats have a bad plan, you need to put out your own plan. Right now, they can’t vote on the alternate republican plan, because there is no alternate republican plan.

Boehner instead has decided to skip the whole “pass a republican plan”, and go straight to “get an agreement so we only have to vote on that”.

I believe politically his thought is that if they only vote for the compromise, it can’t be held against them by democrats in 2014, and that republicans will be so outraged by the democrats and obamacare by then that they will vote republican no matter what happens.

If they instead pass their own plan, it will have to have significant cuts, especially if they are trying to replace the defense cuts with other cuts. Every cut will be highlighted the next two years to show how republicans hate the poor and middle class, and were willing to destroy them to help keep rich people happy.

Boehner thinks first that this could hurt us, and that somehow if he plays this right, the democrats WON’T just say those things anyway.

Flake appears to be saying that he just wants to stop playing games, and present the actual plan we have, no matter how unpopular it is. Lets vote on it, so we can say we tried, before we compromise.
