Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

Jim it already has been done. There are NO pro-life, pro-family planks anymore in the GOP. Isn’t that the real problem here...the GOP doesn’t agree with our view of the world?

My God man look at how many people were duped and are still duped by the Bush’s and Gingrich...

What are you talking about?

You really can’t see the truth can you?

Gingrich admitted he was and is a progressive.

Until the end of the primary literally 45 days before his book was to hit the streets he had an entire chapter on Global Warming and the need for Cap & Trade - that HALLMARK of a progressive. Once it got out about the chapter and it was publicly trending positive for him he removed it. Why remove it if it was so important that is required an entire chapter?

Just go look at the executive orders and the bypassing of Congress over and over again by Bush W, he set the stage for the next asshole to come in and supercharge it.

Obama blames Bush for everything...I blame Bush for Obama.

I am praying that Glenn doesn’t blow it all over Gay Marriage. I won’t be able to stand with him.

Odd that you can find reasons to slam Newt and W but you defend Beck and Romney...

I voted for Newt and for W, and I'd gratefully do it again over Obama and Romney. Deal with it.

Under the libertarian mantra a state should have the "right" to allow incestuous marriage on any level, polygamy, infanticide and any other form of depravity it wants.

I agree with your entire post. I have a strong libertarian bent when it comes to the federal govt trying to dominate me, but I do try and balance that bent with the understanding that for my country to be prosperous we do need some limits.

Thinking about this issue from a Christian perspective I get angry with our Pastors and Priests. They have done a terrible job educating Christians why Marriage is so important and is a reflection of the faith we claim. As a result, we now have a country that sees nothing wrong with validating an immoral relationship as normal. As John McCarthur preached a couple weeks ago we truly have embraced Romans chapter 1.

I have never suggested anything like that.

I have had one consistent suggestion.

We have to fight these battles locally and not nationally.

Nationally it is over and if we continue to try to fight this nationally right now...WE WILL NEVER get back in power.

Your claims are just wrong, and if you are wrong about something so easily checked out.......I would guess you are wrong about a lot more than just this.

From the GOP platform 2012:
THE SANCTITY AND DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFEFaithful to the “self-evident” truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Preserving and Protecting Traditional Marriage
The institution of marriage is the foundation of civil society. Its success as an institution will determine our success as a nation. It has been proven by both experience and endless social science studies that traditional marriage is best for children. Children raised in intact married families are more likely to attend college, are physically and emotionally healthier, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, engage in crime, or get pregnant outside of marriage. The success of marriage directly impacts the economic well-being of individuals. Furthermore, the future of marriage affects freedom. The lack of family formation not only leads to more government costs, but also to more government control over the lives of its citizens in all aspects. We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage. We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity.

That is the EXACT argument xzins used to support his case against gay marriage, that gays are a disease and they need to be outlawed.

You are a lying sack of shit.

Categorizing any human as a disease is sickening.

Xzins merely pointed out that gay sex spreads diseases. That is a fact. Anyone with any education in health issues would recogize that when you engage in male to male acts of sodomy you are engaging in dangerous and unhealthful activities. Do I need to name all the diseases that accompany sodomy? And you want to solemnize the act by giving it the same legitimacy as traditional marriage. You are one sick puppy.

Now go flush yourself. You are stinking up this forum.

I have never been a Romney supporter. He wouldn’t even be on a list I would consider as a conservative.

Homosexual cultures must fail because they are self-indulgent and overlook stability. That is the case with our current American culture. The homosexuality is a blatant sign of self-indulgence, and the inability to reign in spending is one manifestation of that self-indulgence.

This is spot on!

Another manifestation of this self indulgent attitude is the rise of the state as our nanny. Our youth don't grow up, form family's and start the next generation. Instead, our youth indulge their passions with no commitment and the birth rate declines.

And you actually believe that.

To the establishment within the GOP those are just words. They don’t believe in it.

Watch Boehner will cave in on this without hesitation.

I don’t need to read some political talking points to trick voters into supporting them, I look at their actions.

I look at the RNC abandoning Bachman during the election, I look at the establishment hacks attacking all the conservative candidates so they can force Romney on ALL of us.

You want to read a website get some verbiage that you like and then dismiss the record.

The reference to 1930’s Germany was two-fold.

1) The people were begging the government to come down and support their ideas as laws.

No, leftist came to power in government and made their own twisted ideas into laws. This is exactly what the left is currently trying to do with the homosexual agenda.

2) The Nazi’s specifically labeled gays, jews, etc as diseases and that is the responsibility of the government to defend against those diseases.

Actually, they labeled them as subhumans (truth be told, the belief that homosexuality was a mental illness was pretty much universal until the 1970s) and then targeted them. Today, the left is labeling Christians as "homophobes" and targeting us.

The only difference between Hitler's fascism and Obama's fascism is the groups they hate.

Selecting a group we don’t agree with and making them criminals? You could make the case against ISLAM because they state they want to kill us.

Who is suggesting that homosexuality be a crime?

Categorizing any human as a disease is sickening.

Sure, but what is wrong with pointing out that humans do have diseases?

This is about MARRIAGE and the fact is that homosexuals have exactly the same rights when it comes to marriage as everyone else and they always have.

It is a fact that the poor spread disease to.

Holy crap so do school kids.

Let’s get the mob and round them all up.

Seriously you think passing a law is going to stop the disease. It will take care of itself.

I am not advocating gay marriage in any way shape or form. All I have said is you will lose the argument and be forced to accept gay marriage if we keep the fight at a federal level.

There is no opposition in the GOP (that has any voice) that will be able to stop this.

Why is that so difficult for any of you to see?

Do you want to outlaw smoking, drinking?

They create more disease and economic impact than anything else...

However with all said it is true that historically any civilization that has embraced deviant behavior as the norm as perished and that is exactly where America is.

Our only chance is to restore strong conservative values at the state levels.

We have to fight these battles locally and not nationally.

America tried that with slavery, few policies in the history of the world have ever failed on a larger scale. It nearly destroyed our Republic and we are still dealing with the consequences of it.

We have UNALIENABLE rights, that means that no government should have the power to take them away. This is where the libertarian approach fails because they want to empower the individual states to strip our rights from us.
