In the public schools in Detroit, Mich., according to the U.S. Department of Education, only 7 percent of the eighth graders are grade-level proficient or better in reading.
Some public school teachers in the City of Detroit and around the state of Michigan are reportedly taking a vacation or a sick day today to protest right-to-work legislation likely to be approved by the state legislature. Under current law, Michigan public school teachers must pay dues to the teachers union. If the right-to-work law is enacted, Michigan public-school teachers will be free to join the union and pay dues to it if they wish, but they will also be free not to join the union and not to pay it dues.
Detroit public-school eighth graders do even worse in math than they do in reading, according to the Department of Education. While only 7 percent scored highly enough on the departments National Assessment of Educational Progress test in 2011 to be rated proficient or better in reading, only 4 percent scored highly enough to be rated proficient or better in math.
Statewide in Michigan, only 32 percent of public-school eighth graders scored grade-level proficient or better in reading, and only 31 percent scored grade-level proficient or better in math.

Maybe if they spent a few more millions of dollars the kids in Detroit would be able to read better. Isn’t this the way it works?
I grew up in Boyne City back in the 50's and 60's and I can't see any the teachers back then as anything other than teachers. They taught, we listened and we learned. Many of us didn't go on to college but it wasn't because we weren't prepared.
I can still remember a few of the teachers's names because they were tyrants........One being old "Granny" Davis whose hobby was probably diagramming sentences............
Pretty soon, the only things left to read in Detroit will say "closed", "condemned", "out of business", "do not enter"...
Just remember, no gubmint program is EVER a failure, it’s just ‘underfunded’.
They really should pay their teachers more.
Time to lower the standards.
the Left: Goal achieved...
They don’t have to read. Obama will tell them everything they need to know on his website. (NOT sarcasm)
A lot of proud parents there in Detroit to be sure...
The wifey is a teacher in our community, small school, 20 kids. Half White, half Indian; and parental involvement is critical for success. Our school has always made AYP; passed the benchmarks; even all the Indians are doing quite well. You can look at other schools within our district that are having problems with AYP; alcohol, drugs, parenting, and domestic issues affect the kids in so many negative ways.
State has really started paying attention to the parents last couple years with legal repercussions. Problem then becomes the parents pull their kids from school to avoid legal troubles over child abuse. They claim they are home schooling and the kids get no schooling.
I remember many years back when the wife taught at an urban school. Had a 2nd grader missing all kinds of school. Turned out the father was selling dope, had the kid delivering it on his bike, no joke. Child Services was too busy, didn't have enough resources to do anything. Wife called city police and they parked outside the kid's house, told the dad they weren't leaving until the boy was back in school; he was back in school the nx day and never missed again, true story.
