Merck's charitable foundation has stopped giving money to the Boy Scouts of America. The Merck Foundation says the Boy Scouts' exclusion of gays from its ranks and leadership positions conflicts with giving guidelines and the company's nondiscrimination policy.
The foundation says it will reconsider giving money to the Boy Scouts if they change their policy on sexual orientation. Merck CEO Kenneth C. Frazier was a scout in his youth. He received the "Good Scout" Award from the Philadelphia Cradle of Liberty Boy Scout Council in June. ...

Yes, it’s a premature death but it can be extended for a little while with meds that make Merck a bundle.
Not for all of 2003. I attended the BSA National Annual Meeting in Philadelphia in 2003.
At the time, the Cradle of Liberty Council had adopted a non-discrimination policy regarding homosexuals and the BSA had sent them a cease-and-desist letter threatening dissolution of the Council unless the Council withdrew its policy.
At the meeting, the Cradle of Liberty Council withdrew its non-discrimination policy.
It was only after the BSA threatened to dissolve the Cradle of Liberty Council that it began to 'fight the good fight." Once it did, however, the Council has effective fought Philadelphia's efforts to evict the Council from the Marks Scout Resource Center.
If the Homemsexual Activists were only intent on a “gay friendly” scouting organisation, they could easily form one. That, however, is not the goal. The goal is to destroy anyone and anything that does not bow to them.
Yup, exactly, thankfully the SCOTUS has sided with BSA. Damn the perverts and man the torpedoes :-)
I was about to refute your comment...until I checked out some stories.
What on earth has happened? Six figure salaries?
I knew a professional scouter, when I was in the BSA. He devoted his life to it...literally transformed from a boy scout/explorer to a professional camp counselor..and never quit. I worked at summer camp under him, went on bus trips around the country with him, went to his 80th birthday party, which featured hundreds of men who had been influenced by this man, and sadly missed his funeral.
We all knew he was paid...but it couldn’t have been much. He lived in a modest house in a not so great part of town. Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that the new breed of professonal scouter does not devote his life to it? I fear the BSA is paying alot more to get alot less.
Oh, on the gay thing. I know a surefire way to keep leaders from molesting scouts: no gay leaders.
How many meds does Merck produce that are used by the gay community in its fight against AIDS. If Merck refuses to fall to their demands, will they stop taking their meds???
I suspect that a lot of corporations will be using politically correct excuses for stopping charitable giving that they wanted to stop anyway to save money.
January is going to be a savage month.
They’re all for gays in the boy scouts until the next Sandusky shows up.
Thank you for being a Scout. I had great scout masters.
What, has Merck come out with a new aids drug?
Hold the line, Scouts. It is better to see your organization shrink and retain its purity than to sacrifice its principles in the name of mass.
Please remain one of the few groups in this decaying world that stands proudly by its ideals and refuses to compromise.
Thank you. It’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
I have said for a number of years that the left should bring back the “Young Pioneers”
Calling 'em names will do exactly squat.
Until good people are really ready to walk with their wallets, these attacks will only get more vicious. But most people are too lazy, my extended family included.
It's just "too hard" to drive a little further to another hardware store instead of Homo Depot.
Merck is bug, but it is time, as much as possible, to avoid Merck products whenever there is an option.
Drop those two, and it wont matter about all these corporate donations - NONE of this money makes it to the troops, it all goes to pay for adults wearing scout uniforms, forgetting this is a volunteer organization, and instead insisting that not only they get paid for it, but get paid full time.
Spent 32 years as a youth member and adult volunteer in BSA. Served several years as an officer on a local council's executive board. Saw a lot and learned a lot. BSA National has legions of volunteer members who are major detractors for a multitude of reasons - some of them good. BSA has struggled since its inception in 1910 to provide adequate funding just to meet payroll, much less program expenses. Beginning in the '90s, like most businesses under financial pressure, BSA began consolidating councils to reduce the professional payroll. Youth membership has been declining since 1969 despite many innovative attempts to "reach out".
There is a need for professional oversight - national and local council. I am not in favor of it "going away". The heart of the local council is its camping properties and they are expensive to maintain. Same goes for national and its high adventure bases (Philmont - NM, Boundary Waters - MN, Sea Base - FL, etc.).
The BSA business model with regard to units is, in my opinion, superior to the GSA model. With BSA, the charter institutions, mostly churches, "own" the troop. Not so with GSA - the local council "owns" the units' charters. GSA has always been smaller than BSA.
GSA is now completely compromised by homosexual advocacy groups and Planned Parenthood. Birth control/ sexuality is now part of the program (the older age group programs) and lesbian role models are presented in their printed literature.
Many of the leftist volunteer members of BSA express the opinion on scouting forums that it is only a matter of time when BSA adopts the "local option", i.e., letting the charter institutions (churches) decide whether to accept open homosexual and atheists as members. They expect to see a changing of the "guard"/generations from the older professional scouters to they younger "progressive" generation.
No... even then they will still be all for gays in the scouts -- but they would blame the Boy Scouts for letting such an incident happen.
It won’t be long until a boy will have to declare he is gay just to get into the scouts. The first badge will be awarded when you provide observable proof to troop leaders, you are indeed gay.
Sarcasm...perhaps for the time being.
Merck has always given to far left groups and causes anyway
BSA is making the same mistake as republicans, instead of soem type of advertising - “We are scouts and we have principles, sometimes men with bad intentions have been leaders, they see young men as prey. They have many problems, when we try to exclude them the courts and many cities call us foul names, but we want to protect our young men and we know who are the primary problems.” (now how difficult would that be?)
