Ohio, Virginia eye proposals for more proportional split of electoral votes
The Washington Times ^ | December 8, 2012 | David Sherfinski

Officials in Virginia and Ohio, once reliably red states that have gone for President Obama in the past two elections, have discussed the idea of apportioning their electoral votes by congressional district — a system some say would more accurately reflect the will of the states’ voters but one that others dismiss as an unnecessary political ploy.

The talks come as demographic shifts have pushed the GOP’s reliable bastions to more exurban and rural areas, allowing Democrats to win such states by sufficiently running up their margins in a comparatively small number of densely-populated cities and counties.

To that end, Virginia state Sen. Charles W. Carrico Sr., Grayson Republican, has introduced a bill that would award one electoral vote to the winner of each of the state’s 11 congressional districts, and the state’s two at-large votes to the candidate that wins the majority of the districts.

Mr. Carrico cited the results in the southwestern 9th Congessional District — where Mitt Romney won 63 percent of the vote — as part of the reason he introduced the bill.

“People in my district — they feel discouraged by coming out because their votes don’t mean anything if they’re outvoted in metropolitan districts,” Mr. Carrico said. “It can go either way — it doesn’t necessarily mean that one political party is going to be favored over another. When they come out to vote, they know their vote counts instead of a winner-take-all. I’d love to see other states to do this because I don’t feel the Electoral College right now is a fair system.”

Every state in the union should be like this.

This really isn't about the electoral college but I would like to see Michigan give its votes by district.

I believe I like the idea of making the Electoral Votes dictated by the voting per Congressional district, with +2 going to the overall popular vote winner within a state. Not to mention, it will marginalize any effects of voter fraud, should there be any.

lol It will make campaigning somewhat of a nightmare, but will be best for the voters I think. For instance, a democrat presidential candidate wouldn’t spend 5 minutes in South Carolina during the general election campaign, but they would almost need to now if there is a CD within the state that could go their way. Same thing as it relates to Republicans with California or New York.

It will maintain the spirit of Federalism, would be a good middle ground between the traditional system we have now and the demands on the part of liberals for a national popular vote deciding elections, and I believe our Founders would approve!

If the RINOs can’t win through principles and issues then make it so you can win by changing the rules.

Heard that PA might reconsider this in 2013 as well.

Anyone gonna guess if WI or MI might do this?

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!!!! 2010 still reverberates!!!

This is the ONLY way to overcome the Inner-city parasitic tribal votes and associated Vote Fraud. You can’t outvote the dead, Illegals, and black multi-voters.

Every battleground state with a GOP Governor and Legislature should pass this kind of law as soon as possible.

I used to not like this idea, because the libs proposed it, but now that the GOP has many state houses and governorships, it’s time to do it. A more proportional representation is good for the Red states.

This should be done immediately. The cities have begun to overwhelm the rest of the electorate to the point where they are losing their representation within the quadrennial “assembly” that is the electoral college.

Sounds good to me. Better than the bull**** “popular vote” crap being pushed by the liberals.

They almost did it in 2012 but chickened out. Hopefully they’ll do it now—it’s really the only solution to the massive voter fraud that the Democrats do.

Precisely. It is much too easy for the dhims to commit voter fraud in their filthy cities that they can easily marginalize the people who live in the rural areas of a given state. One of the unrecognized dangers of owebama’s reign is how sophisticated election-stealing has become. They have nationalized the dirty politics of chicago.

If this is not done it will be a long time - if ever - before a non-dhim will win the presidency again.

Yes, big city urban sponges are killing America. They are disproportionately voting in their favor and more rural areas are getting hosed. The only thing that would be better would be 1 state = 1 vote.

This is a great idea for Ohio. There is far too much clout in the major metro areas (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton), and all of that clout is on the side of the socialists, voted by the entitlement class.
Proportional allotment would be a great way to get some voice back to the conservative districts.
