(Reuters) - Iowa police said they have not yet identified bodies found by hunters in a wooded area on Wednesday that could be those of two girls who vanished last summer in a case that received national attention.
Captain Rick Abben, chief deputy of the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, could not say that the bodies were those of Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook, 10, until they are positively identified by the State Medical Examiner's Office.
But Abben said the families of the two cousins had been notified.
"It's definitely not the outcome that we wanted," Abben said in a news conference that was streamed live by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
The girls were last seen on July 13 riding their bicycles in Evansdale in northeast Iowa, after leaving their grandmother's house. Their bikes and a purse were found at Meyers Lake in Evansdale, prompting investigators to drag and later drain the lake in a fruitless search for the girls.

this sucks, two little girls who did no harm.
God is still digging, He has been doing so since the beginning of time....and He still hasn’t dug a hole deep enough for whoever did this.
People wonder why cops are the way they are. Dealing with pure evil even on an irregular basis has to be mind numbing.
I hope someone puts the bastard who did this through the same terror he put those girls through...
I Every time I read a story like this, I think about when my now college age daughter and her little friends were that age. It just makes me sick, but I know that these horrible killers will meet God’s judgment someday.
Pray for the families. They are certainly devastated. May God give them comfort.
Oh, how sad. I just saw their pictures on a store door the other day and thought about them.
And yet, the Iowa Senatecontrolled by Democratswill not allow debate on any death penalty bill.
Thankfully, justice doesn’t rely on this world’s authorities.
