Sounds hairy. Do the Dreamliners regularly fly at 41? I remember riding on one of the original 727’s on a demo flight in 1964, and they took it up to 40, but throughout the service of that model, through the stretch and QC’s, they rarely flew over 36 or 38. Control surfaces start to get mighty thin, mighty fast, way up past the sweet spot. Starts taking a lot more fuel, too.

I wouldn’t think plastic would give much protection, even in a “minor” crash.
Pilots no longer fly, they are flight systems managers. A “seat of the pants” pilot would have overridden the changes and flown the plane.
A pilot once told me he liked flying the 727’s since it was less computer automated. I think it required a 3rd crewman as the flight navigator.
And while all this was happening, what was the crew doing; playing canasta? Or were they maybe playing a friendly game of grab-ass with the flight attendants?!

Former Air Force and Navy pilots should be given top preference for being pilots of commercial aircraft IMHO. Unless this criteria is already in place?

Actually it’s cruise speed was originally supposed to be Mach 0.89 as the 7E7, as the 787 it is Mach 0.85. Basically 5% faster then the 767 and most airliners, and 20% less fuel burn. Other interesting points are it is composite, which gives some great benefits for passengers.
It’s way easier on your ears as it can pressurize 60% higher, much better when you have a cold or sensitive ear canals.
One of the other stress’s of today’s jet traveler, all the air is humidified so much less dehydration. Other metal aircraft don’t do this.
Turbulence is minimized by a state of the art turbulence mitigation system.

My opinion too...But the guys that “really” flew and lived...Have no interest..I could write a book about them...
Composite materials today are quite strong. Formula car tubs are made from them and they provide good crash protection.
