I wouldn’t think plastic would give much protection, even in a “minor” crash.

Composite materials today are quite strong. Formula car tubs are made from them and they provide good crash protection.

And neither will conventional foil covered mobiles. Crash worthy is not in the job description of any commercial craft, except possibly to survive one belly flop sans landing gear well enough for the passengers to get out before being carted to the bone yard.
