A new Boeing 787 Dreamliner flown by United Airlines was diverted in midflight to New Orleans on Tuesday because of concern about a possible mechanical problem.
The plane was headed to Newark from Houston when it descended over a 10-minute span to 31,000 feet from 41,000 feet and slowed to 480 miles an hour from 655, according to FlightAware.com, a data provider.
The plane, which carried 174 passengers and 10 crew members, then rapidly recovered its speed and turned sharply to the south over Mississippi, according to the Web sites flight log.
After the incident, United, the first North American carrier to fly the new planes, was examining one of the jets generators, units that provide electrical power to the planes engines, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Usually fly faster than 525 mph.
For example, a typical flight from Dallas/Fort Worth en route to Madrid, Spain.

I’ve taken off in hundreds of aircraft but have landed in them less than ten times.
Look for the union label on those generators.
There's a sure sign of conginital insanity.
Anyone jumps from a perfectly good aircraft that isn't on fire and spinning toward the ground either needs therapy or to join the Airborne.

Any time you can walk away.....
I beg to differ and I chew my nails.
I hope you pack your own chutes! lol
“Or were they maybe playing a friendly game of grab-ass with the flight attendants?!”
YES! LOL
“What is the cruise speed of a Boeing 787?”
Is that a European Boeing 787 or an African Boeing 787? /sorry, getting late and a bit punchy.
>> Control surfaces start to get mighty thin, mighty fast, way up past the sweet spot.
Yeah, maybe you could ask retired TWA pilot “Hoot” Gibson about that ...
And neither will conventional foil covered mobiles. Crash worthy is not in the job description of any commercial craft, except possibly to survive one belly flop sans landing gear well enough for the passengers to get out before being carted to the bone yard.
The radio transmissions from the United 787 in-flight emergency already uploaded on youtube.

A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner made an emergency landing in New Orleans on Tuesday after experiencing what the airline called a “mechanical issue” while air traffic control conversations seemed to indicate an electrical problem.”
This is a link to the flight log.
Topped out at 41k and 655 mph.
Gotta laugh at that one, yep I’ve been down the quick way many times myself. And yes I was with the 75th Airborne
Since Boeing headquarters are now in Illinois, (I hope they got a hell of a tax break), suckers, after moving their major manufacturing out of Long Beach, CA. & Everett, WA to South Carolina I’d have to say it’s the Mexican Boeing 787 and the cartel’s first choice of travel.
Go to bed now.
I took the Boeing factory tour in Everett, WA last spring. I believe the guide said the client picks either a GE or Rolls Royce engine that’s fitted to the Boeing Dreamliner. The SC facility is for troubleshooting.
That should be ‘engines,’ of course. :^)
Haven't seen a decent looking stewardess on an American carrier in 10 years.
Uh, that's because they've all been promoted to Flight Attendant for the last 20 years.
They give the TSA a run for their money in the who sucks worse department.
