~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: United States Army Soldier Systems Center, Natick, Massachusetts The United States Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC) is a military research complex and installation in Natick, Massachusetts charged by the U.S. Department of Defense with the research and development (including fielding and sustainment) of food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and other service member support items for the U.S. military. The installation includes facilities from all the military services, not just the Army, and is so configured to allow cross-service cooperation and collaboration both within the facility and with the many academic, industrial and governmental institutions in the Greater Boston Area. The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC) is the Armys one-stop Soldier-support organization. SSC is responsible for researching, developing, fielding, and managing food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and Soldier support items.
NSSCs goal is simple: Provide Americas Soldiers with the best equipment in the world. To achieve this goal, the Natick team has consolidated full life-cycle management of Soldier items into a one-stop, Soldier support organization. NSSC conducts research, development, acquisition and sustainment to maximize combat effectiveness and survivability of freedom's defenders. Natick Labs has developed or is developing the following items or systems:
The MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) Irradiated food The "instant chapel" Bulletproof clothing Land Warrior Future Soldier Future Force Warrior Collective Protection Shelters Interceptor Body Armor Quarpel, a water-repellent, water and stain resistant textile treatment In an effort to develop a warrior system to meet the Army's transformation goals for the Objective Force, the US Army Soldier Systems Center (Natick) was leading a new Army-wide research effort called Objective Force Warrior. The proposed concept for OFW would upgrade Land Warrior and enhance warfighter lethality and survivability by bringing many of the ideas of the Future Warrior concept to reality in the 2010-2012 timeframe. Learn More About NSSC HERE! The Museum of World War II, Inc., with 10,000 square feet of display area, is described by Londons Imperial War Museum as a fully staffed private collection containing the most comprehensive display of original World War II artifacts on exhibit anywhere in the world. The museum is located a few miles west of Boston, at the junction of two major highways. Formed over a period of more than 40 years, the collection documents and illustrates the period from the Versailles Treaty, ending World War I, to the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials, ending World War II. All of the more than 6,000 artifacts on display, as well as 100 mannequins with complete uniforms and equipment, are original and from the Second World War.
The presentation of the exhibits is a major reason that the Museum is private and not open to the general public--although visits are regularly scheduled several days a week for those who will appreciate and understand the era and the collection. Most of the artifacts are not behind glass. Visit The Museum Of World War II HERE!
