WASHINGTON The United States is moving toward recognizing the Syrian opposition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people as soon as it fully develops its political structure, American officials said Thursday.
A decision to recognize the group could be announced at a so-called Friends of Syria meeting that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to attend in Morocco on Dec. 12. It is the most immediate decision facing the Obama administration as it considers how to end the government of Bashar al-Assad and stop the violence that has consumed Syria.
President Obama has not signed off on the move, and the meetings to decide the issue have yet to be held. Debates within the administration concern legal issues about the implications of diplomatic recognition, how such a move might affect efforts to enlist Russian support for a political transition in Syria and, most importantly, the state of the opposition.
Britain, France, Turkey and the Gulf Cooperation Council have already recognized the opposition, which was enlarged and overhauled at a meeting in Doha, Qatar, last month at the insistence of the United States and other nations. It is formally known as the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.

Have they even considered whether the opposition will be better for the United States, for Israel, or even for the Syrian people than the current government? I didn’t think so. I hope they are as accommodating of the Tea Party’s battle against socialism in America as they are of other opposition groups.

Obama is leading from behind here once again....donza know.
I have sources that tell me the Syrian Christians are petrified of this opposition group. They are said to be ultra-islamist, and will ethnically-cleanse the country, meaning wipe out Christians, if they get hold of it.
I’m not fan of Assad, but that is the key question. What would come after him? Given Obama’s MO, wouldn’t be surprised to see a future Syria embrace Sharia law and cozy up to Iran & Hezbollah even closer than Assad did.
Another islamist state coming - thanks, Obozo
It is hard core fundamentalist islam.
I expect billions of your tax money in aid forthwith.
More reason for Obama to support them. He has been systematically overthrowing Middle East secular dictators in order to install the Muslim Brotherhood and other transnational Islamists. Obama will be hailed as the creator of the Greater Caliphate before he is done.
No. We must at all costs have worldwide democracy!... later to be sold out to UN bureaucratic totalitarianism. This is the only ‘fair’ position we can take, to encourage a globalist society.
The resistance fighters in Syria have clearly been infiltrated by Al-Queda and the Muslim Brotherhood (same thing). Support for them is support for a new Islamic theocracy with the ultimate goal of destroying Israel and creating a new Islamic caliphate.
What has Assad ever done to us? Sure, he’s a dictator, and occasionally, he has sponsored terrorism from Iran and North Korea, but everyone knows he’s just a narcissistic suit. Like Gaddafi, his only concern is his own power. He’s not comparable to the psychopaths in Iran. We can deal with this guy. In fact, Assad has kept relations with Israel reasonably cordial from what I can tell. We don’t hear Assad yelling “bathe the land in the blood of the Jews!” very often, which to Ahmedinijad is called ‘Wednesday’. The Israelis clearly prefer Assad to a Muslim Brotherhood led Syria.
We should stay out of this war, and let it run its course. In the end, we’d only be setting up a new dictatorship which would be even more hostile.
First Libya....then Egypt....now Syria....
Trade the dictator you know for Shariah-frenzied jihadi savages.
Of course, it all started 33 years ago with Iran.
Here...we...go...again.....(sigh)
It will be all right in the end. I just hope to live long enough to get in on the slaughter of the koranimals.
I’ve heard that too. IIRC, Assad is actually a member of some minority Islamic group that is not popular with “orthodox” Muslims, and thus his state was relatively tolerant of non-Muslims and Muslim minority sects. It was basically secularist and nationalist rather than Islamist.
Any government in the ME is going to be or become a dictatorship, because Islam simply makes anything else impossible. The reason everybody from Saddam and Assad to Ghadaffi and Murbarak ran their secret prisons and harsh states is that otherwise they would have been overthrown by the Islamists a long time ago. I’m not saying a police state is a good thing, but the simple reality of the fact is that Islam cannot coexist with anything, either a secular state or other religions, no matter how permissive of Islam they may be. Permissiveness, in fact, emboldens the Muslims and makes them dream of making their control absolute.
They most certainly have studied it quite thoroughly! Otherwise, they would not be moving to support them. Clearly, they've determined that they *will* be worse for the US/Israel/Syrian-people, and thus worthy of Øbama's full support (and taxpayer dollars).
recognizing worldwide jihad again??? answer to question. wtf did you expect???
I recognize that Syrian opposition is filled with Islamists.
well this clears it up for me. these freedom fighters must surely be militant islamists if they have the support of the democrats.
how about recognizing Egypts opposition to Morsi??
