Many see a right-wing conspiracy in the death of Portlands commercial progressive talk-radio station. But Bain didnt act alone.
Carl Wolfsons last show on KPOJ-AM 620 sounded like victory. For the past six years, Wolfson, a former standup comedian, hosted a three-hour morning drive-time show that had turned into a radio clubhouse for Portland liberals.
Wolfsonlaser-fast with a quip and constantly in defense of Democratsspent the weeks before the Nov. 6 election boosting liberal candidates and puncturing Mitt Romney.
Romney has zero foreign-policy experience, Wolfson liked to say during the campaign. He was asked about the Middle East, and his only response was that Donald Trumps hair should return to its pre-1967 borders.
The days following the election were celebratory, with President Barack Obamas re-election, and with Democrats triumphant in all Oregon statewide races and in control of the Oregon House.
When he signed off the air Nov. 9, Wolfson was giddy with momentum. Then his Clear Channel boss walked into the KPOJ studio.
Man, what great shows this week, Wolfson recalls telling Chris Sargent, operations manager for the stations owner, Clear Channel.
But Sargent had an executioners grimace. I looked at his face, Wolfson says, and I knew.
Sargent then dropped the axnot just on Wolfson, but on the only commercial left-wing political talk station in this overwhelmingly blue city. By 5:30 that evening, KPOJwhat many Portland liberals believed was their own megaphonehad become Fox Sports Radio 620, the citys third all-sports radio station.

They weren’t killed. They committed suicide. Probably all the stores and shops and things are Conservative - wouldn’t advertise there.
ratings probably
anyways... does Portland really need another sports station?
They don’t even have a football team
Put a bird on it!
Generally what will kill a show is: crappy ratings, host does unrecoverable action, station changes format, personality conflict with management, lack of advertisers for whatever reasons.
Their chief weapon: ridicule. Very little, if anything of substance.
I found that Donald Trump joke very substantial. :-)
Who wants to tune into a misery channel 24/7 unless they're uber miserable themselves? If liberals were brutally honest when campaigning for an election, they'd be lucky if they got a dozen votes nation wide.
I lived in Portland for a while. The liberals all said they loved the station, but in truth they didn’t tune in.
LOL!
I only wish this assclown was replaced with live Rush Limbaugh or even Mark Levin rebroadcasts.
They couldn't stand listening to themselves either!
We just need some government subsidies to keep it alive.
KBOO?
Is that Pacifica? They also get public funding
KOPB is (somewhat) taxpayer supported, part of the PBS system. KBOO is listener-supported, and they’ve never been off the air for lack of funds.
Some of the folks I heard on KBOO during the political shows make Pol Pot sound like Gerald Ford. These people would need to look over their left shoulder, with a radio telescope, to see Lenin.
Yep.
Liberals are more boob-tube oriented. That is why their radio stations need public funding
MSNBC wouldn’t be on without money from NBC. They’re willing to lose money to keep putting out pro-RAT propaganda.
