As the clock ticks and we watch the various players move their pieces into place, it's becoming increasingly obvious that Republicans are in a no-win situation. Theyre ether going to have to cave and agree to a tax increase without meaningful spending cuts or take the blame for going over the fiscal cliff. Here are five reasons why going over the cliff is by far the best option.
1. It's a Trap!
Though House Speaker John Boehner foolishly helped to manufacture this trap by making tax increases the primary issue in the fiscal cliff negotiations, there's still time to extricate himself and his party.
Obama and the media could not care less about the economy or the deficit or the middle class. What they want is a rerun of 1992 in 2014.
There was all kinds of media praise and back-slapping from Democrats after George H. W. Bush agreed to break his "read my lips" tax pledge in exchange for spending cuts. The result of that broken promise, though, was that he looked weak, like a dupe, and faced a bruising primary challenge for reelection in '92. And during this campaign, the same media that had baited Bush into breaking his most memorable campaign promise, turned on him. We all know how that ended.
If House Republicans abandon the cornerstone of their party and agree to Obama's tax increases, they are almost certain to lose the support of much of their base. The fallout would likely be worse than 1992.
After all, if conservatives can't count on the GOP to hold the line on taxes, what good are they?

Have you noticed how the attention of the Democrat "mainstream" news media is focused entirely on what the Republicans will "give up"; what the Republicans will relent on; what the Republicans will cave on? (Naturally, the Democrat "mainstream" newsrooms are pushing the GOP to commit party suicide by agreeing to otherwise thoroughly meaningless, drop-in-the-bucket tax hikes.) So... what, exactly, are the rats bringing to the table? An agreement to "slow the rate of spending growth"? Wow, big whup.
NOT... ONE... WORD... from the Democrat "mainstream" newsrooms about what Ubama and the rats are offering to give up to get a deal done. No matter WHAT the Republicans do, the newsrooms will make sure they get full blame for both spending "cuts" AND tax hikes. The rats have nothing at stake! What's to "negotiate"? Talk about a lose/lose situation for the GOP.... Whew.
Absolutely the best thing that can happen is to go over the "fiscal cliff". The Republicans at this point should be strategizing how to make sure Ubanga and the rats catch as much of the blame as possible. The PR game starts YESTERDAY for the Republicans, and they are already playing catch-up - - the rats have been working on it all along. And now is the time for Republicans to go nuclear - - I mean, Ubanga is taking off for vacation in Hawaii while the nation is on the brink of economic calamity? That's some "leadership" there...
By the way, an added bonus for refusing to cave to the rats and strike a deal is that the GOP House will then get the chance to wrap the upcoming debt ceiling debate around Ubanga's neck.
This is what Newt was referring to- for the republicans to stop negotiating with the democrats. Newt said tonight that both sides had been talking deals in secret meetings. He told house republicans to stop that now. May explain why the current Speaker and McConnell are trying to look aggressive now since Rush and Newt hammered them on these actions. From Newt’s interview, it’s one huge cluster mess up there. Those people up there have got our government so messed up it will take someone strong as steel to fix it. Those people up there, won’t be able to. They all should be thrown out today to the curb. Newt said investigations should already be happening to look into the Treasury’s corruption. It would take someone very intelligent to get reforms up there. Newt says this artificial cliff was caused by the repubs and dems who are there now. They did it, they are to blame. He said it was no hurry to agree on the democrats huge spending/increase govt bill. He said they could extend and break up the huge bill into one step at a time. He said the media frenzy, we should ignore because they don’t get it/covering for Obama to hurt the repubs.
one reason
they are completely incapable of negotiating a deal that helps.
They should be saying every day
what is your plan mr. president??
what is your plan?
Then laugh
Foxes in the hen house..
Foxes in the hen house..
Let the massive spending cuts and tax hikes hit. Tired of this charade.
Mitt Romney said Obama was a good man. I am pretty Obama is negotiating in good faith, or Romney would not have been so firm on how good a person Obama is. A good man would not go on vacation for three weeks while the country faced dire economic calamity.
Newt is a bad person. He is nutty. He used to challenge the Democrats and go after them when they did bad stuff. And he was mean. He made Jim Wright, Speaker, leave the House. If he were in charge he would be in attack mode all the time, charging the Democrats with not caring about the economy, the middle class, or anything but their power. That’s no way to negotiate in good faith. That’s why he lost the primary when Romney ran all the ads in Ohio saying how unethical and crazy Newt was.
Romney would be able to work bi-partisan with the Democrats. That’s what he did in Massachussets. He would definitely get a deal with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. Newt should stop whining and suggest the Republicans being in Mitt to help broker a deal fast, on the Fiscal Cliff, like he did when he got RomneyCare. Mitt is a businessman. Not a nut. He could get this deal done fast.
It’s time for Americans to take THEIR election “revenge”. This is the ‘RATS’ mess. Force them to OWN it! They GOOBERS need to wish Barry and his ‘RATS a Merry Christmas and hit the links or get a “pickup” basketball game going. It’s Miller Time! Screw the cliff!
The reality is that unless we reform the tax code in a way that takes out cronyism, engage in entitlement reform, and repeal Obamacare, nothing positive will come out negotiation with the RATS for the country. At the same time, any deal will compromise conservative values and destroy the party.
Sometimes in negotiation you got to be willing to walk away to let the thing blow up and then pick up the pieces. However, the GOP needs to market the situation in that the Rats and the President don't really want to negotiation because everything that is coming is by their design. This is not some sort of unfortunate cosmic alignment. Time to take responsibility for your Utopian policies.
Yup. That’s about right. They have the guns, the will to use them, and all we have are rocks to throw, and words to say.
Use every obstruction we have at hand. Force them into frustration. Break their demeanor, and cause them to expose themselves, who they really are.
Push THEM over the cliff. Make them scream their obscenities loud and clear on the way down.
All the things in the Fiscal Cliff are things that are going to happen anyway. Tax increases, defense cuts, sequestration... They are all inevitable, because we can’t keep spending more than we take in indefinitely.
I say we face this now, in this small way, rather than facing a bigger problem later. Sure, we are still screwed, but we will be slightly less screwed in a few years if this roadblock is placed in the way of the Leviathan.
The Republicans should continue to negotiate, and then when the deadline nears, they should lay out for the American people the positions offered by both sides. So far, the Republicans have been willing to deal, but the Democrats are demanding the Moon and stars and offering nothing in return. The Republicans should lay all that on the table, point out that the Democrats are not negotiating in good faith, and walk away.
Since the Middle Class is to be the beneficiaries of all of the new Obama largesse, it is only fair that they should get their share of the tax increases.
ONLY spending cuts can make a difference!
The tax hike Obama says he wants would run the gov’t for less than 8 days.
Note: NONE of it would be used to pay off debt, it would be spent 3 times.
If Obama CONFISCATED THE ENTIRE WEALTH of that 1%, it would run the gov’t for less than 4 months, and you can only do that ONCE!
Unless the Repubs insist. Obama signed the bill that defined the cliff and it is his law that will cause the fall. If the Dims don't put something substantial on the table, the Repubs can merely say that in the spirit of bipartisanship, they will not nay-say what the Won has decreed.
ping for later
Call the POS’s bluff and let it all fall down. Give the thug what he wants.
Exactly!
I keep repeating this over and over again for two years and certainly the election should be a wakeup call. All those R House surrenders to O should too.
I will repeat my suggestions here that address this problem specifically:
1) Pass the partial extension of the tax cuts through the House to disarm Obama and Dems of that club, then get on TV and make sure voters know you are not for raising taxes on the middle class.
Then you can walk away from Obamas/Geitners list of outragous demands.
2) And create a video commercial of all the Dems who have been lining up calling to go over the cliff to use as a club to beat Dems with next January when the heat really goes up.
Then go over the cliff and make Dems and O own it, unlike the other standoffs. Try to win this time,.
