CAIRO: A Cairo court on Wednesday sentenced to death seven Egyptian Christians tried in absentia for participating in an anti-Islam video that was released on the Internet in September and prompted violent protests in Muslim countries.
"The seven accused persons were convicted of insulting the Islamic religion through participating in producing and offering a movie that insults Islam and its prophet," Judge Saif al-Nasr Soliman said.
The low-budget video, produced privately in California, denigrated the Prophet Mohammad and triggered anti-US protests and attacks on Western embassies around the Muslim world.
The convicted persons included Egyptian-American Nakoula Bassely Nakoula, who is currently serving a one-year-jail term in Los Angeles after an American court convicted him of probation violations that stemmed from his role in the movie.
The 13-minute video portrays the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and a sexual deviant, although cast members have said they were misled into appearing in a film they believed was an adventure drama called "Desert Warrior."
Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church did not issue an official comment on the ruling.
"The Church denounced the movie, which it has nothing to do with. As for today's case, it is a court ruling and the Church does not comment on court decisions," said a Church source who asked not to be named.
Christians make up around 10 percent of Egypt's 83 million people and many complain of discrimination in work and treatment.

Obama’s U.N. speech denouncing the video, and his silence now, makes him complicit in the death verdict. If anything happens to any of ths defendants, Obama is responsible.

Some things are just beyond any kind of constructive criticism.
Because to a Muslim, NO criticism, by definition, can be “constructive”. That would mean revision and disassembling of many of the structural parts of the whole ideology of Islam.
And that may just cause its collapse. A thought held in great dread by all the theologists of Islam.
One thing we know for pretty sure - many of the factors of mental instability tend to be hereditary in nature. Islam has shown itself to be highly supportive of mental instability, and in fact, they thrive on and exploit most of the more violent forms of mental instability.
Casual and intentional inbreeding within the tribal structure over centuries has nourished and intensified these strains of mental instability.
Probably a third or more of Muslims alive, if they relocate to a civilized part of the world, would soon be adjudged insane or mentally incompetent in a rational and unprejudiced observation of their behavior.
Precisely. Took the words out of my mouth. Nobody would have noticed that obscure video if Obama, his Communist servants, and his slavish press hadn't publicized it.
Much like the Iraqi prison-torture nonsense that the press publicized back in Bush's time, resulting in several dozen random deaths in Mohammedan countries in response.
The difference, of course, is that now it's the President and his appointees who are doing it, not just the anti-war traitors, because they are happily working with the enemy.
I would not be surprised to find that trial transcripts contain Obama’s U.N. speech, and Susan Rice’s 5 TV interviews, as evidence against the defendants.
I almost forgot the State Dept ad featuring Hillary and Obama denouncing the video in Pakistan.

Since they’ve managed to convince more than a billion people that “freedom” means SUBMISSION, I’d say it foments mental instability.
That’s how I read it, too.
