The White House sharply escalated its attacks Tuesday on Republicans trying to stop Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice from succeeding Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state. Press secretary Jay Carney described GOP lawmakers as being gripped by a politically fueled "obsession" with a series of television appearances Rice made shortly after the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, in which she wrongly suggested the attack had stemmed from a demonstration over an anti-Muslim video rather than a terrorist assault.
Carney's comments came after Rice met privately on Capitol Hill with Republican senators who have said they intend to block her nomination if President Barack Obama chooses her to replace Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. Rice also acknowledged for the first time, in a written statement issued by her office, that her initial public comments on the Benghazi assault were wrong because there had been no protest outside the compound.
Carney said the U.S. still does not know who carried out the assault, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. But he said GOP focus on Rice's early statements was a politically motivated distraction from efforts to identify those responsible for the killings.

Sounds like the White House desperately wants to keep the focus on her.
I just wish it was someone other than Tweedledee and Tweedledum leading the charge. And now my good senator Ayotte has thrown in her lot with those two dibwads. Very unfortunate.
A good offense is the best defense.
bwhahaha... Silly Democrats. This is an old mental mind trick BUT WE ARE TALKING about the Secretary of State. This stuff is kinda important... Anyways, remember when Hillary Clinton tried labeling Carl Rove as obsessed with her in an effort to silence him??? This was when Hillary was leading in the primaries against Obama.
When I was a stupid teenager, I shoplifted a can of snuff from a grocery store and got caught. I couldn’t understand the store manager’s ‘obsession’ with that, either.
From what I’ve seen of Ayotte to present, she looked as if she had her head firmly screwed on.
What did she do to cause you concern?
I had hoped she would emerge to be a sharply focused advocate for Conservatism.
I have had it with these people. Flush them down the toilet. I don’t care enough anymore to think of anything funny to say.
I think Rice had little huddle with Obama and Clinton , they told her exactly what to say
Jay Carney is such a crude and vile individual ~ so typical of Obama’s inability to draw talented people to government service.
I think we need to get back to the fact that the white house allowed Americans to die so they could attack our constitutional rights for a second time.
Yep us mean Republicans are just obsessed..you damn right we are obsessed..FOUR AMERICANS ARE DEAD and I want to know why they died!!! Of course liberals want us to forget about Benghazi, because they know their messiah Obama either ordered the hit or is covering up the smuggling of weapons from Turkey to Syria which was the reason why Ambassador Stevens was even in Libya at the time..but yeah, 4 dead Americans are just a “bump in the road” right Barry
...and the dems, especially Obama have an OBSESSION with blaming Bush for all or economic issues....
Why the lies, Mr. President? Maybe we are obsessed with finding out why you concocted a stream of lies about Benghazi.
Anyone leading the charge would be portrayed as Tweedledee & Tweedledum.
I'm not faulting the Senators for leading the fight. I think when they say/do something good they should be supported.
That’s because the IDIOT DemiRATS/PharaohBama drones are treating it as a crime and not as an act of WAR.
Tweedledee & Tweedledum have blood on their hands for rushing to support action in Libya in the first place. They didn’t bother to ask who our allies were, who would take over after it was done or anything.
This might not have happened if they had been doing their jobs in the first place. Instead they were nothing but rubber stamps.
In most circumstances, I believe it’s right to support people doing the right thing. When it comes to McCain, you have to be very careful.
Up until yesterday he was blasting Rice. Today he and Graham had morphed that to blaming Obama. What does this signify?
In real terms, it means that McCain is going to be content to trash Obama, and quite likely support Rice’s nomination after all.
This guy has short-circuited more Conservative attempts to do the right thing, than anyone I’m aware of.
On September 11, 2012:
Carney, I'll bet Nixon wanted the questions to stop too.
