In a series of remarkably candid comments, Prince Charles hinted that he feared his legacy as king would be cut short.
During a visit to Dumfries House, the stately home in East Ayrshire which the Prince helped save for the nation, he joked about his reputation for pursuing projects with notorious vigour but made a poignant reference to his mortality.
He said: Impatient? Me? What a thing to suggest! Yes of course I am. He added: Ill run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if Im not careful.
The comments, which were recorded for a film on the Clarence House website about the Princes involvement with Dumfries House, will fuel ongoing speculation that Prince Charles, 64, is more eager than ever to take the throne after 60 years of waiting.
In 2008, he became the longest-waiting heir to the throne in British history, overtaking his great-great grandfather, Edward VII.
While royal aides insist that he is fulfilled by his current role as heir apparent, supporting the Queen and being actively involved with the Princes Trust and his numerous other charities, many royal commentators have suggested that he feels frustrated his reign has not yet begun.

Nope. The succession rules are set out in the Act of Settlement of 1701. Any changes must be ratified by the Parliaments of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
He wasn’t invested as Prince of Wales until he was 10.
He wasn’t invested as Prince of Wales until he was 10.
Wrong. He was invested as Prince of Wales at age 21 in 1969.
He added: Ill run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if Im not careful.”
Hey Chuck, We all have expiration dating. However, there are some people that don’t belong here anymore.
Long live queen Liz!
Actually, for all his quirks, Charles is well liked by most of the British public. And we, whilst not agreeing with everything he says, agree with some of his statements (his attacks on 60s UK architecture for example are very popular)
I have little time for the Charlie-bashers, as too many are just silly women with fetishes about the blonde bimbo he was married to.
I have met Charles and Camilla, and they were a very charming couple. And Charles a charming and intelligent man.
BTW, I am NOT a royalist. I simply like the man as an individual.
Except he is not the next in line after Charles..
I agree.
Can’t.
I’m sure he is a likable guy. However the queen is not obligated to stay until she dies, but she is doing so and she is doing so for a reason.
Charles has his foibles, his mistakes, but I and many British people think he will be a very good King. And frankly his ‘disgraces’ are nothing in comparison to earlier monarchs.
He didnt murder, rape or abuse anyone. He was an adulterer, but then SHE didnt waste any time being so either. Of course, now the silly bimbo is dead, she’s a bloody saint.
Funny how the same people here bashing him, are the same people who happily voted for a man who was an alcoholic, and turned his life around. Where is the Christian forgiveness?. Where is giving people a second chance?.
Yes, because almost no monarch abdicates.
Its damn all to with what she thinks of Charles.
She will die Queen. Its that simple.
Sorry, but thats rubbish.
For a start, the line of succession means Charles MUST take the throne. Secondly, you dont know what the Queen thinks. This idea she deliberately wont give him the Crown is gibberish. The Queen wont abdicate simply because the vast majority of monarchs die, they do not abdicate.
I hope Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels was on the recent “Name your Funnest Movies” thread, ‘cause that one ranks right up there. Especially this scene :)
Yes, because she is still fit and wont give up the throne.
Its damn all to do with this silly idea that she ‘dosent want’ to give Charles the crown.
Of course, the American people called him back into service for two terms as President, which power he again willingly relinquished after two terms.
The American model, laid down by Washington, of willingly giving up power, is not the norm, historically.
BTW, I don’t have any problems about Diana/Camilla thing. I DON'T think Diana was a saint. I think she was an idiot. Perhaps a good-intentioned idiot, but an idiot. My issues with Prince Charles have been with his political madness.
As for a second chance, he might find one in a monastery where he can't do too much damage.
That’s sad.
If I were a monarch and had a realtively young, competent successor, I’d be out of there... It’s just not work living a life so circumscribed by ritual and tradition. And it cuts cost on the state funeral...
