CINCINNATI One of Cincinnatis largest employers fired approximately 150 employees Wednesday for failing to get a required flu shot.
TriHealth offered all of its 10,800 employees free flu shots. Employees had a month to get the flu shot. The deadline was Nov. 16. Employees who did not get the shot were terminated Wednesday, a company spokesperson said...

Well, another place I’ll never work.
Had two flu shots in my life, caught the flu both times. No flu shots in the last 42 years - and no flu.
And all the people that push that crap can kiss my rusty dusty. I am absolutely convinced it does much more harm than good.
I knew an adult who got MS. As far as they can figger for a cause was a flu shot but it was unprovable. I do fine without them but worked with a guy who got it immediately after getting a shot. He never got another flu shot.
They’re pushing it heavily at the VA hospitals. Never had one, that I know of, though the military gave me so many shots that anything could’ve been in those. You got the flu from it?
Definitely wrong! I would think a lawsuit is in the making?
Healthcare workers or not, I don’t understand being able to force anyone to do anything to their body without a court order and a darned good reason.
Same here. The only flu shot I ever got put me down for a week.
“You got the flu from it?”
Not the day I got the shot, but within the next few months. By the way, if you press any of the liars you meet about this, they will then change their tune and say that the shot may not keep you from getting the flu, but that the flu you get will be ‘milder’ because you had the shot.
I always answer, “the flu I’ve gotten while not taking the shot has been even milder yet - none at all!”
I am absolutely convinced the flu shots are nothing more than a huge profit for the drug companies and have absolutely NO benefit to society.
One of my 2 doctors warns against getting a flu shot. He was happy to hear that I don’t get them. My last one was about 15 years ago. I have bad allergic reactions to the shot that got worse every shot. My last and final one caused my arm to swell up for about a week with a knot about the size of a half pin pong ball. The knot gets really hot and is very painful. Not a normal pain like a tetanus shot or a hard punch in the arm. It’s more like a branding.
BTW - I did get the flu once since then. I missed 11 days of work. I would still rather have the flu than the shot.
I’ve never had a flu shot. One year when we lived in Michigan, our next door neighbor got the flu shot, and we ran into him when he arrived home from getting the shot. He had the flu within 24 hours, and hubby and our children all had it within days. That ruined me on those shots.
We had swine flu hit our house before it was a big news item. One of our boys caught it from his baseball coach who had gone to Mexico for a weeklong vacation. The flu shot would not have helped.
And people on FR wonder why some workers might want join a union. The union hall of fame would be filled with the portraits of the senior managers of this company.
I’ve never had any ill effects from flu shots beyond a slight rise in fever and some tiredness.
Other than that, they seem to work for me. I’ve gotten the flu when I haven’t taken them, and not gotten it if I do.
A doctor friend tells me that they are absolutely ineffective if taken after the flu season breaks out, that odds are you’ve been exposed in one way or another, so taking them late is a waste of time and money.
It is correct to be able to make it a condition of employment. Company owners have a right to freedom, just like employees.
When you enter an agreement with a company or person, you are simply making laws that bind the two parties. It is your choice to enter into the agreement or not.
H1N1 strain was included in the vaccine by that winter (and still is). I didn't elect the flu shot for my kids that season because they had also already contracted the swine flu (diagnosed in the ER) so had natural immunity. But the immunity is temporary so they and I have had the shots since (mine last week, and it hurt pretty bad for an hour and then quit. Usually I feel nothing).
So much for free choice, as long as you do your job. My wife and I refuse to get flu shots, despite the coercion from others. We never get the flu. However, everyone we know who gets them seem to get sick often. Our granddaughter had to get the shot (required), and she was sick a week later with a high fever. I haven’t been sick in many years, don’t want to start now, no shots for me.
Me too-— never had too much of an issue taking the flu shot.
Remember that the flu shot is a crap shoot-—its only effective against the strains of flu they predict will hit that season. If another strain is not included and it strikes the person then the flu shot is ineffective. Since I travel in planes constantly I need all the protection I can get.
Oh - and please note that I would never work there. I don’t get flu shots.
disclaimer I worked has a public health nurse so my bias is clearly toward vaccination
really whether the hospital is within its legal rights depends on the employment contract that employees signed. If their contract stated that they agreed to receive the flu shot annually as a condition of employment than yes the hospital is within their rights to fire employees out of compliance.
there are valid contraindications for not receiving a flu shot allergic reactions being among them
influenza vaccine requires two weeks to mount a proper immune response to provide protection. also the vaccine is not 100 percent effective in preventing the flu and effectiveness is individual and generally decreases with age
injectable influenza vaccine can not cause flu because it is made from dead virus not capable of causing infection. the mist is different and can cause flu because it contains live ( although altered) virus especially in immunocompromised individuals
the flu is a serious illness that causes approx 30,000 deaths/year and countless $ losses in productivity due to absences from work/school/daycare
off soapbox now
