Black Friday Begins (Early): Walmart Workers Already Striking in at Least Seven States
The Nation ^

Posted on 11/22/2012 11:31:32 PM PST by matt04

It’s on.

A year and a half after retail workers announced the founding of a new Walmart employee group, five months after guest workers struck a Walmart seafood supplier, and seven weeks after the country’s first multi-store Walmart strikes, the Black Friday strike has begun.

...

Expectations are high for a historic strike. Given Walmart’s role as the dominant employer of our era, the current wave of work stoppages is already among the country’s most consequential twenty-first century strikes. But in interviews this month, workers and organizers described today’s actions as a turning point, not a climax, in their struggle against the retail giant. “This is the beginning of something…” said Dan Schlademan, a United Food & Commercial Workers union official who directs the allied group Making Change at Walmart. “This is a new permanent reality for Walmart…2012 is the beginning of the season where retail workers are going to start to stand up.”

“There’s going to be more days that we’re going to strike,” said Rozier, “and it’s not going to stop. I’m not going to stop until they respect us and give us what we want.”

Your attitude indicates to me that you expect WalMart workers to be your slaves, toadies and beyotches. Me-— I could care less if they strike and inconvenience people because I am not going there on Black Friday or most other places. It’s all about me dennisw!!! so I don’t care same as you and WalMart workers. Me! Me! Me! Me! Getting to lord over your inferiors

Ever see the yelp restaurant reviews? The women are the most critical about service etc and everything. They figure if they pay they get to rent a smiling rent_a_slave. Connect the dots my FRiend.

"Retail employees will have back-up from Occupy activists, women’s and consumer groups, and Walmart warehouse workers."

I don't know about you but with all of them "watching my 6" its move forward with confidence! /s

LOL :~)

“The Nation”, LMBO!!!
Yeah, this phoney baloney attempt at propaganda will work, lol!

I shopped at my local Walmart just tonight and there were at least thirty new employees there, all wearing those new yellow shirts to distinguish them from the blue-shirted long-time employees. Not a striker in sight! Only about a million shoppers.

>> Why, why, why? Someone tell me why.

Equally perplexed; thus, my comment about State law that 2DV clarified wasn’t a factor.

I don’t get it. Almost seems like a “Strike” game is be played by both the employer and employees.

Maybe enrolling and training is a factor in the timing of the strike. I’d image, however, there are plenty of unemployed folks that can be brought up to speed real fast.

I don’t know if I would strike such a large employer during terrible economic times. You can be replaced **snap** like that! There are probably 3 or 400 people wanting your job.

See post #23.
I guarantee you, the regular long-time employees are looking around and seeing scores of new holiday temps who would gladly take their jobs. The yellow-shirted temps were all over the place tonight.

Probably would ... give it a shot!

I went to target when they opened at 9 - it was completely nuts but all of the employees were wearing smiles and were in a better mood than usual.

Bought the kid an ipod and used the $40 gift card combined with their 1/2 off toy deals to work an $80 contribution to Toys for Tots. Figured an hour of my time was worth a $80 in gifts for others so I did it.

It was my first "black-whatever" sale and I concur that the people in there are nuts - me included :)

Best thing Walmart can do is IMMEDIATELY replace the strikers, in areas where needed hire security and if if gets bad shut the facility down.

Won’t take a whole lot of firings and shutdowns to bring the goons to their collective knees.

“Twinkie” may just be the best thing that happened for Walmarts sake as it showed Management can have some backbone and not be intimidated.

Enough people get canned and you will see a change in attitude.

Even the ‘food stamp crowd’ may see the difference in the $1. bread at Walmart vs 2.25 + elsewhere..

Surprised Govt hasn’t intervened and make the ‘big box’ stores raise prices in areas - much like some states did with gas stations.

They make the people like Walmart/grocery stores with gas sell for a range with the local area to ‘protect’ the local businesses.

I remember when gas stations would have giveaways to get you inside the door - And was quite taken aback when seeing such signs as ‘we sell for the cheapest price the law allows’...

I would imagine that since I am paying the rent, buying the product, paying taxes etc I should be able to give away cigarettes, gasoline or whatever is legally mine, bought and paid for.

But I can’t.....

Walmart should take this as the perfect reason to never, ever unionize.

That’s funny. I was *this* close to doing the 9:00 Target-first-time-in-my-life thing, too.

I MAY go out tomorrow. But I have a different mission. I’m going to go into LOCAL shops....just to see what’s to be had.

Maybe the strikers should take a quick look how "give us what we want" worked out the Hostess.

It still might. Then Obama takes over Hostess like he did with GM for the UAW workers the unions still may win.

The whole country is waiting for their snacks to be made by unions thugs. Sheesh....

Good to know. If a person wants those jobs they should be able to get them from someone who doesn’t/

Oh my aching stuffed belly
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Oh how selfish....<: <: <:

You should have foregone YOUR meal, had PBJ samwitches on 2 day old bread, and had beans and rice for the main meal.

I am sure that is what was served at the White Hut for the pResident and his family after spending a hard day handing out food to the starving masses.

Funny how a turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas is supposed to be meaningful (I know every little bit helps) but if I were the pRez and other pols, I would be working to see that people would become more self sufficient.

Saw on the tube the other night all the people ‘fawning’ and sighing orgasmistically about what a wonderful, great man the pResident is, taking time from his busy schedule (can’t make this stuff up folks) to come down here and make sure I have a turkey.

Much the same as M. Lewinskys parents - after hearing their daughter was a ‘receptacle’ for #1 -
‘I never imagined that MY daughter would get a chance to meat(sic) the President’.

I've never seen "my" Target so busy, I mean the lot was completely full and the lines were threaded through the grocery isles 20 back from the front.

I live about 30 miles southwest of Minneapolis, past me is all farm land - I have no idea where all of these people came from!

You know what might be fun .... Show up during these "sales" and slip things in peoples carts when they aren't looking. Think of some of the embarrassment one could cause with simple pharmacy items :~)

I would never do that .... but just imagine

I worked retail for several years. I knew that it would require certain sacrifices if I wanted to make a living, including nights, weekends, holidays, storms, etc.
