Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.
The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.
Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. They had to do it.
I dont have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasnt fair.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.
Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasnt going to work for the employees.
Were not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up, he said. They stopped paying into the pension fund.

One story I’d read said that the Teamsters were shown the books, went through them with their own accountants, and told the bakers that no, Hostess wasn’t kidding or bluffing, they really were broke. They’re a slightly smarter grade of parasite - when smacked in the face a few times with the proof, they eventually accepted it. After all, if the host company dies, they lose their income from the workers there.
They don’t have to work now. Obama’s gonna take care of them. /s
send them all to law school
they can fill those 15,000 IRS agent enforcers for Obamacare
hey diana let us know what is happening in Madistan, with many changes in employment going around the country how is Madistan holding up. There is the big bakery in Sun prairie just of 151. what about WPS in Madistan near the beltline? how is the state home for the developmentally disabled is it still open or what. It has been a few years since I have been back to the god forsaken place. when I graduated in early 2000, i fleed Madistan as fast as I could. worked for a time in Milwaukee area till i moved up to the UP of Michigan to have my own business.
Why are you talking to yourself?
There's another dumb thing you did. You voted for Obomba. That's why the health care premiums are going through the roof.
Lamont..... must be Amish.
Here you go! Some surprises (to me) here. MA could go as high as 900+ per week benefit from this info.

I know the Hostess Outlet here was picked clean today and apparently the workers were surlier than usual.
You’d be wrong.
The Teamsters looked at Hostess’ books and realized it was a pay cut of about 10% or a pay cut of 100% and did the math.
The bakers.. not so much.
I’ve lost track of the figure, but I think over 80,000 folks have lost their job since election day..... and the nightmare it’s just beginning.
I wonder how they’re liking that socialism thing so far. Holiday sales should prove interesting.
Rocky Mount really isn’t a nice town. And it’s only going to get worse...
Lived in Rocky Mount in ‘59. Glad my parents moved on.
Paying the workforce is certainly a part of doing business. Paying ransom isn’t.
I got this from a cursory google search.
there was lots of speculative junk from huffington post but I know they make up facts as needed.
I know nothing about this publication. However this article says the Teamsters wouldn’t move on pension bennies.
Sadly we closed on this house in September. Had I known then that MN would go solid blue again, I would have bought east of the river.
This is the Obama-nation. Lamont the Obamabot union president may not have any problem at all. He knows what side his bread is buttered on. The rest of us are toast. Fried to a crisp.
Bwahahahahahaha!
