SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- A controversial plan to raise the cost of registering your car in California could soon be in the works in Sacramento. Even with the Democrats' new supermajority, there are doubts lawmakers will be able to push through another tax.
In what could be the Democrats' first test in the new supermajority powers in the Legislature, a group called Transportation California has asked St. Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, to introduce legislation to triple the vehicle license fee you pay to register your cars.

Mexifornia will be the first 100% government-operated State. But first you have to drive the non-compliance types out; TAX THEM OUT. What’s left is one hell of a manual workforce from Mexico.
The only ones who will not have to pay are those who don’t have to pay now.
Illegal Aliens, no insurance, no license, no registration fees.
Oh well, whenever you get pulled over just remember these words...No Habla Elengles, or words to that effect.
...Travis County where Austin is. They go where they find lower taxes, and then vote to jack them up.”
and take away the plastic bags in the grocery store and remove all the snack machines from City Hall. It’s just beginning in Texas.
Just got our bill for a 2001 Ford F150...Oregon...$86.00/yr
To heck with the idea of buiding a fence on the mexican border - we need to build a fence around kalifornia to keep those crazy libtards contained!
Do it and let it burn.
In CA, according to their website, a new car costing x dollars would be .0065x+81. Example: A certain car costs $25,000 new. At 0.0065(25000)+81 the registration would be 243.50. The 81 dollars goes to fees for registration, highway patrol and inspection exemption (no inspection for 1st 6 years but they charge 12 dollars for it anyway). I think my registration was about $55 in Ohio on a 15 year old clunker.
The Rats have a short memory. A hike in vehicle fees got Gray Davis recalled from office just about 10 years ago.
Yes, it can happen again, even in California.
Why not have a “FRUIT TAX” in California? That would pay for everything with some money left over. Why San Francisco could pay for the whole highway system makeover just by itself.
Better yet, why not have a CEREAL TAX? You would be taxing every fruit, nut and flake in the state, including those in the State Legislature. Money for all and to all a goodnight.
Niiice...
I feel bad for the hard working Californians that are being fleeced.
That's part of the message. California has been wasting many thousands of dollars in the last couple years converting auto lanes to bicycle paths. They take two lanes in each direction and downsize that to one lane for autos. The bicycle paths are seldom in use.
I've got several cars, but will downsize. Lots of people doing this will decrease the amount of registration fees collected. Unintended consequences. Hike taxes, get less money collected.
They will move to Texas or any red state that does not have this crap and ruin it, the same way they ruined their own states.
I must say for cali to do this, it is extremely racist, given the impact on the illegal aliens and the black gangsters.
No kidding. It's like they all have turds stuck in their unders and they can't understand why everywhere they go they smell stink.
Unbelieveable!!!
Idiot do gooder dem voters. You hurt the exact working poor you always talk about helping. The stupid do gooder save the earth regulations make their gasoline costs higher, so they can’t even buy other necessities with gas prices so high. And now you vote in the super majority who can do things like triple the car tax, making the working poor stick with dangerous old cars that are affordable tax wise, if they can even afford cars.
Liberal = pain for the honest working folk and goodies for the lazy. Unintended consequences.
Stop categorizing all Californians as losers. “They” include very decent conservatives who see nothing else but to leave the state. California conservatives are strong and deep — we have to be, living here. There are a lot of us, even though we are outnumbered. Never forget. If it weren’t for Californians you wouldn’t have a FR.
People don’t realize that every dollar sucked out of people’s wallet is money that is taken out of money circulation where is can grow new wealth. New wealth may come from the money market which brings new capital to businesses. Someone like Facebook entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg who is “focused on building as high quality and good things as you are” takes that capitol and hires more than 2000 people. Since, Zukkerberg’s Facebook headquarters is located in Palo Alto, California, maybe it is time he move his headquarters somewhere else.
The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest possible amount of feathers with the smallest possible amount of hissing.” Jean Baptiste Colbert
