Ground has been broken in the heart of Philadelphias Gayborhood for a housing project that will serve the needs of the LGBT community.
Its described as the first urban project of its kind six floors of low income housing for elderly lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders.
Its being built with a mixture of local, state and federal funds. And that was reflected by the number of politicians on hand for Fridays ceremony.
Mayor Michael Nutter was joined by his predecessors, John Street and Ed Rendell.
Once completed, this project will provide 56 units of affordable housing to people 62 years and older. The facility will be energy efficient, generating more than five percent of the total energy that it uses from within the building, Nutter explained.
The building will be named after the late City Councilman John Anderson, who was instrumental in the passage of a civil rights bill for those in the sexual minority.
The doors are expected to open at the end of next year.

They already have such facilities. I believe it’s called a “Bathhouse”. Or in some cases, the washroom at the neighbourhood shopping mall.

‘Sexual minority’? Mmmm...that’s a new one to me.
Wouldn’t a gay only housing project violate civil rights laws which prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation?
When these people put their hands out, you've got to watch more than your wallet.
Exactly.
This is discrimination! I want a project for straight folks.
Hmmm - having homosexuals grouped in one place. Like some kind of camp....
Will they have to wear pink stars on their clothing as well?
One is forced to wonder what happens during the application process in order to prove membership? Is there an oral test or something?
I never met a gay who was broke.
Why do we have to pay for federal monies for faggots and broken down old Carpet munchers.
Hey! Is some of that money going for “upgrades” to the Rest Area bathrooms on the turnpike?
you know we'll have to segregate completely in the future....
I have homosexual family members and I wish them no harm, just good....but honestly, its just ridiculous the amount of appeasement they get.
...isn’t this discrimination?
Will there be a community bathhouse?
Will there be a community bathhouse?
Public monies used to benefit a select minority of the population - especially a minority which is reputed to be among the best educated and most affluent in the country - sounds unconstitutional to me.....

Generating heat from friction, I guess.
