Full title: We petition the obama administration to: provide University graduates ability to trade their diplomas back for 100% tuition refunds.
We petition the obama administration to: provide University graduates ability to trade their diplomas back for 100% tuition refunds.
Because of the inability of recent college graduates to find gainful employment in order to repay their college debt, and since this college debt cannot be eliminated in bankruptcy, and most of the recent additions to the job market have been in service related industries, the Obama administration should take up the cause of reducing college debt and hold those accountable responsible.
In the name of Consumer Protection, recent college graduates should have the ability to return the diploma and not make any reference to receiving education from the college in exchange for a 100% refund of college tuition. This may be extended with a graduated (ha, get it?) reduction for the last four years, with a red line at January 20, 2008.

The new American Refrain:Life screwed me, the government failed me, somebody's gotta pay.
I think this would be a good disciplinary approach to the schools. It would eliminate gender studies and other useless departments because they don’t produce paying jobs.
The “woman” with the $90,000 student loan debt with the BA in Hispanic Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Studies will probably be the first in line...lesser idiots will start forming behind her.
Isn’t this THE Iowahawk?

Since most of them haven’t paid their loans, how about they trade their DEGREE for forgiveness of the loan.
Suddenly, the shortage of college degrees will give me a 30% bump in pay.
On a practical level, this seems like a barfer but, stepping back for a moment and reflecting on the horrible election results of last week, I find this kind of humorous. What if all the baby birds start coming out of the woodwork demanding their cut of the loot, now that they have reelected the great benefactor? It is sort of amusing to think of daily protests and demands for more of the nation’s loot from every imaginable quirky group.
The one and only! As he tweeted earlier; "I'm serious. If 'Lemon Laws' can protect consumers who buy defective $20k cars, they can protect people buying defective $200k diplomas."
It's brilliant! Instead of having the taxpayers guaranteeing student loans, the colleges would guarantee them. So much for spending house-sized piles of money for useless degrees. Of course with Obama in the education establishment's pocket it could never happen.
They paid for an education not a job. Did the college guarantee them a job after graduation?
I’ve got a better idea, your diploma is witheld until you pay at least 25% of student loans and is recinded if not paid in full 10 years past that point
I think this is a brilliant idea.
If enough students with worthless degrees in worthless majors slammed the universities for refunds upon learning how harsh reality is in the real world, the useless liberal arts departments would be shut down, post haste.
It’s a brilliant idea. But because IowaHawk (nee Dave Burge) proposed this, it’s not only brilliant, it’s funny as hell.
Imagine how many law schools would be shut down when their demon spawn can’t find jobs. The legal cause is there - most schools are lying like cheap rugs when they peddle their stats on what graduates can expect in the job market with these useless degrees in useless subjects.
I’ll say it once more: It’s brilliant.
I don’t know of any college/university that “guarantees” a job, but many publish false and misleading job market stats as to what the graduate who chooses various programs can expect for job opportunities and pay scales when they graduate.
In other areas of product sales, some of the nonsense peddled by schools would be actionable as fraud. Especially the stats promulgated by law schools.
Frankly I kind of like it, the colleges and government loaners are in a racket game. Gov’t guarantees the loans; schools up the payment and train the next generation of Dem voters; gov’t loans more money; schools increase tuition; gov’t loans more money; schools increase tuition. . .
They are selling something that is usually worth little, at an extremely high price. I do believe there is a great deal of fraudulent guarantees placed on the worth of the college diploma, with some degrees/colleges being an exception.
But it’s mostly a racket. The taxpayer, of course, guaranteeing it all.
“They paid for an education not a job. Did the college guarantee them a job after graduation?”
True, yet, the colleges explicitly or implicitly promise that the great new job will more than cover the cost of their education.
“Imagine how many law schools would be shut down when their demon spawn cant find jobs. The legal cause is there - most schools are lying like cheap rugs when they peddle their stats on what graduates can expect in the job market with these useless degrees in useless subjects.”
Absolutely. A family member was REALLY pushed into borrowing EVERYTHING to get a law degree. She was told the $100,000 price tag would get her a job where she’d bill $125 an hour. Shown charts with starting salaries for attorneys at $85,000 per year; average attorney after ten years clearing $150,000. They told her not to work, but to borrow it all, as she’d have a hard time keeping up with the class load, and sure enough it was very demanding, but she did make it through. She figured the cost of the student loan payments would be well compensated by the increased salary. . .
except that in reality, people with law degrees are rarely hired to do anything in the last few years. Most are unemployed or working OUTSIDE the law profession. Some states, the bar pass rate is less than 50%. So you can’t practice. And that pass rate is arbitrary, with graded essays and so forth.
It is a racket, I am telling you. Someone with a Bachelor’s and three years of law school is not a lazy slacker. But the degree is usually WORTHLESS.
Instapundit and Professor Jacobson’s blogs have been covering this for a few years now. They also talk about other degrees.
Actually my conversations with some recent gradates of our local university and others would seem to indicate that they would be justified in asking for a full refund on the basis of not having received that for which they paid.
I read that as “trade diplomats back for 100% tuition” and thought fine with me. Let’s trade the diplomats!
On a serious note, it’s the knowledge transferred that is valuable, not so much the diploma.
