Advice to California's GOP: Leave Or Better Yet, Change California needs Republicans' fiscal prudence, but the election shows there's no political future for them without a major makeover.
By Steve Lopez November 10, 2012
Memo to the California GOP:
Rough couple of weeks, huh?
First you found out that the number of registered Republicans in California has dipped below 30%, which means we are fast approaching the day when the entire state membership can fit into two golf carts.
To make matters worse, of the 1 million people who used a new online voter registration system this election cycle, only 20% registered as Republicans. And 60% of those who registered were under 35, which means your future's not looking great.
Then the dominoes really started to fall.
Gov. Brown's Proposition 30, the first general, statewide tax hike in two decades, passed so easily that the ghost of Howard Jarvis threw himself in front of a truck.
Proposition 32, an all-out attempt to defang public employee unions, got pummeled despite an infusion of last-minute anti-labor cash from Arizona.
What could be worse? I'll tell you what. In the state Legislature, Democrats won supermajorities in both houses. Do you know what that means? It's like handing your teenager a credit card, a checkbook and the car keys so he can drive to an all-night orgy.

Simple solution ~ two states ~ East and West California. East gets all the water rights. West gets all the welfare cases and the public debt.
It’s pretty bizarre to see someone crowing about the accelerating decline of a once great state.
This is a GOLDEN opportunity for a judo throw using their momentum against them. GOP should utterly close shop and let California be a one party state. (it is anyway)
They GOP should fight like the third monkey to prevent ANY federal bailouts.
Then nationally highlight the failure of California as the object lesson for the nation.
California is beyond bankrupt.
The democrats think increasing taxes and spending is going to solve the problem.
California is a state with a state income tax of over 13%.
More and more productive people and business will leave.
At some point in the not too distance future - California is going to DEMAND a federal bailout.
But no one in the media will blame the democrats and liberalism....
California today = USA in 20 years
California has decided their own fate. You just need to either leave or accept their solution.
Unfortunately with Baraq in charge, Ca, Il, and NY will likely be able to issue state bonds with federal guarantees.
Illinois governor (surprise!) has already started talking about having the fed taxpayers guarantee their catastrophically underfunded state pensions.

It’s going to possibly bankrupt faster when it taxes the heck out of itself with the healthcare costs and the carbon tax.
“Then nationally highlight the failure of California as the object lesson for the nation.”
Sounds nice but it would be a total failure.
The ‘rats would claim that California’s collapse was due to the evil Republicans and greedy capitalists — and more than half of the rest of the country would buy the argument!
Why any Republican would live in that state is beyond me.
My entire life, Cal was always in the vanguard.
Hot rods, sports, space program, many others.
So you’re right, they are a precursor for our federal budget implosion.
Republicans in Californicate should switch over to Spanish for everything. Change their name to Nationale Republica Party of California. Only use Spanish in paperwork and in the media. Promise everyone two tacos and a couple of tamales in every pot, low riders with boom boxes for every family, and green cards for everyone in the extended family ... in essence, just out lie and out promise the Democrats. You can do what ever you want after you get elected because you can blame it on Moonbeam and his butt buddies and fellow junkies.
You’re dead-assed broke, California. You’re the poster child for the Democrat Party’s idiotic policies at the State level (Obama, of course, at the Federal level). You’ve reduced a once-great state into a pathetic, bankrupt, shell of its former self.
F**k you and the pink horses you rode in on. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
not a problem I will be long by May
West Californians escaping over-taxation and regulation that they created would just migrate and pollute East California. A border fence and STRICT immigration policies would be needed.
I think locals could come up with even more invisible fences to keep those people out.
not caring much anymore.....
may all their dreams come true....
solid people trying to make it are just going to leave...
I just want to know where the dividing line is?
Steve Lopez. If I remember your name for no other reason it will be the day you get laid off as the LA Times struggles to remain relevent.
I will also have a healthy gloat if all the wonderful things that are happening in California ever come to bite you, personally or fiscally, in the ass.
