According to the White House, more than 7,000 people have signed petitions for Indiana and Kentucky to secede from the union. Related.
In total, there are 20 states with similar petitions, all of them filed within the last two days.
The petitions all came from individuals and not state governments.
Withdrawing from the union is not legal.
They all read the same way, "We petition the Obama administration to peacefully grant (the state) to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government."
The petitions also cite Declaration of Independence.
The petitions require 25,000 signatures each, by Dec. 10. If they reach the threshold of 25,000, theyll receive a response from the president.

Newt Gingrich for President Of South Carolina 2013!
Texas Vs. White does not stop a state from seceding. Sorry. If the people of that state want to secede than they leave. It is the ultimate Constitutional right under the 10th amendment.
“well we know that aint gonna happen.i would prefer they expose election fraud.”
And then what? That racist Nazi snake Holder at Just-Us won’t prosecute.
This could be kindling under a proposed bonfire..
What legal is whatever Eric Holder says it is..
And voting has pretty much died as an alternative..
I don’t mean this to be funny.. Anger is seething..
And if mine is too..
This is a waste of time. Why help Obama weaken America further?
Ya know. I’m just as upset as we all are over this election. I was simply making the point this would piss Obama off. Does it come to a hill of beans? No!!!! But anytime Obama is pissed by what’s left of us true patriots it makes me proud.
Fair point... and I agree with you. However, my (unclear) point is that no matter what the sentiment towards secession is, the people will refuse to go through the immediate pain required in order to get the long term cure.

I understand your concern because I look for big brother to be lurking everywhere, too, but this is the official white house site for petitions. Here is the link for the main index page from which you can view all of the states that citizens have so far introduced petitions for.
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions
Alaska isn’t there for some reason, but it can be found through this link.
I’m not saying that it is safe as far as IP logging, but it is the same place people have gone to write a petition to legalize marijuana, so there.
I hear a lot of cynicism on this thread and that is shameful. We need to have a serious discussion about the viability of seceding, either as individual states or as a group. There are many unknowns and quite a few details to work out before we find ourselves cut off from each other when sites like this are shut down. You’ve got to stop taking this freedom of speech thing for granted. Communism doesn’t allow it. Just ask a former Soviet citizen.
For you folks with the sneering condescension, maybe things just haven’t gotten bad enough for you yet. Trust me they will. You don’t have to look very far back in the past at how much liberty we’ve already had stripped away to see where we are going. Let’s just hope this option is still on the table when you find you have no freedoms left to lose.
While I’m disappointed in the election results, practically to the point of being distraught, this secession movement is not unlike your run-of-the-mill liberal “feel good” exercise that won’t amount to a hill of beans.
Can we get 25,000 signatures so the Upper Peninsula of Michigan can secede from Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It is not like detroit or Lansing contributes anything to the UP. It is bad when I for myself have to go to Wisconsin for just about everything medical as well as major grocery shopping (Woodmans in Appleton or Green Bay, Aldi’s in Rhinelander). More of my neighbors have the houses up here as second homes from Ilinois. The 51st State Superiorland. Or just maybe the UP can go with Canada. Man it is interesting more and more cash that I do spend in the UP is giving back as Canadian. Oddly enough many positions for employment in the UP of Michigan go unfilled - lack of talented or appropriately skilled people to fill the open positions.
“Yeah, one must register with the White House before signing a petition!”

Yes—and obtain several permits and other sorts of authorization. LOL! ;)

Excellent advice.
Right or wrong it was a politically stupid area to venture into. this is the big leagues - any halfway bright poitician would know the press would twist his words and crucify him over it. Especially after what happened to Akin. It was a dumb mistake and we are the ones who paid for it. Bad, bad candidate.
As long as there is Social Security, there will be no attempt at secession.
Bob Schieffer said on election night that if IN had renominated Lugar he could guarantee that the Republicans would not have lost that seat.
I’m sure that’s true.
We traded an 80% Republican for a 97% Baraqqi for 6 years.
Since Mourdock held state office, I foolishly thought he was vetted for a national race.
Even an amateur like myself realized when Journ0list Stephanopolus started the “war on women” theme in January.
How can a national senate candidate not be prepped to handle that discussion? Especially after the Akin firestorm.
There is a ruling, but its one of those that is worthless on its face. If a state or portion of the country elects to leave the union then what a court in DC says won’t matter worth a hill of beans. The question is whether the executive elects to force the issue.
New York and New Jersey are also on the list. I think people are adding States just for the Hell of it.
This is despite the fact that we will be 100% self supporting and a net EXPORTER of oil by 2030.
The least we can do is rub his nose in the fact that 50% of the country is aware that he will go down in history as the man who, single handed, brought on a Civil War.

They remind me of the character Benjamin in “Animal Farm.”
