Benefit to fall $50 a month starting in January
Ohio families receiving food stamps could get an unwelcome surprise come January: $50 less every month in assistance.
For the 869,000 households enrolled in the program for the poorest Ohioans, that could amount to about $520 million annually out of the grocery budgets.
Because of the way the federal government calculates utility expenses for people receiving the benefit, a mild winter nationwide last year, and a lower price for natural gas, many families could experience a significant cut in aid, those familiar with the program say.
Recipients should get a letter from the state Department of Job and Family Services this month explaining the change, said Ben Johnson, a spokesman for the agency.
Meanwhile, food banks and others that distribute food assistance are bracing for increased demand.
They are going to increase hunger among our most vulnerable working families, seniors, children, and persons with disabilities, said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks.
Ms. Hamler-Fugitt said her organization is particularly concerned that some seniors or persons with disabilities who have a low benefit amount could lose all their monthly assistance.

Yeah a lib friend that I argued really badly with the other day told me Reddit users want a boycott of Papa John’s because Schnatter warned Obamacare would raise the cost of a pizza 10-14 cents (price increases) b-b-but he’s giving away 2 million free pizzas! Economic illiterates on EBT are telling business leaders “yr doin it wrong!”. They win the game then egg the other team’s houses.
“could get an unwelcome surprise come January: $50 less every month in assistance.”
could
less than what?
What the Government does is taking, no matter where it goes, that money was mine and taken at gunpoint.
This is awful. How are food stamp recipients in Ohio ever going to afford to buy Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 if they have to spend their own money to buy food?
I can place the blame mostly upon Ohio for the now apparent permanent dictatorship of America.
Why bother to vote at all when just about a single state, a couple of precincts decided the whole election for the whole country?
The Obama support team used the best computer programs to predict exactly where to place its faux voters, and the stole the election.
A government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take it all away.
Here you have put your finger on the Achilles heel of the lib vote fraud strategy. They have no idea what they have been messing with.
We have been told for several generations now that this is a democracy (when it isn't!), because, in a democracy, a majority can vote in anything they want. Once everybody believes that is what we are, then all you need to do is, get this — NOT to get the majority to vote for you, but to get them to think that a majority did. Crooked votes work just as well as real ones for this purpose — but only for a while.
Once people get the idea that the outcome of an election is fixed and their votes have no effect, it becomes a totally different game. Anyone for jungle law?
Yep...
I have simply run out of empathy, and sympathy. I am emotionally bankrupt and have nothing left for the poor but contempt.
I may yet give to a charity, but it’s not going to be this calendar year and doubtful for next. My issue develops is when I make a donation to a charity/relief fund, I immediatly make it onto some list where I am then bombarded with calls and letters asking me to donate to whatever cause if the month is.
As for the poor, let them starve. Maybe we will have less of them.
They voted for the government to take care of them and i shall honor their wishes.
