The entire investigation began when Kelley "complained to an F.B.I. agent who is also a personal friend" about the e-mails she was receiving warning her to stay away from Petraeus, the Times reported. (An FBI agent is a good friend to have.) This agent then "helped get a preliminary inquiry started," one which would eventually lead to the discovery of Petraeus's extramarital affair.
Even though the FBI looked into Petraeus and Broadwell and found no evidence of crimes or security breaches, sometime in October this same FBI agent leaked information about the scandal to GOP congressman Dave Reichert of Washington (although why Reichert was chosen is unclear). Reichert then passed the so-called "whistle-blower" onto House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who did the responsible thing and relayed the concerns to FBI Chief Robert Mueller. According to a Cantor statement:
I was contacted by an F.B.I. employee concerned that sensitive, classified information may have been compromised and made certain Director Mueller was aware of these serious allegations and the potential risk to our national security, Mr. Cantor said in a statement.
The agent's outreach to these two Republican congressmen about an issue that had already been investigated by the FBI raises some questions. Over at The New Yorker, Jane Mayer asks them:
But what, exactly, was this F.B.I. employee trying to expose? Was he blowing the whistle on his bosses?

I'm not sure that I would have done differently.
Did the message say “Stay away from Petraeus?” I thought it just said “Stay away from my guy.” In that case why would Kelly go to Petraeus? Or maybe I’m wrong...
Kelley was also a good friend with Petraeus’s wife so why would she turn the FBI onto Petraeus’s wife? If Kelley thought it was his wife, she would have at least showed or told Petraeus about the email and let him figure it out and take care of it. I’m mean we are talking about the soldier/General of the century here, not a whuss!
Make sense to me. The FBI agent was a friend of Kelley’s too, and I can see her asking the agent for help about these weird threats that she knew to be baseless, rather than embarrassing herself by running to Gen. Petraeus who she obviously held in high esteem.
(Based on everything I’ve read which indicates there was nothing going on between Petraeus and Kelley other than friendship)
She has a very important and supposedly respectable friend, so she asks her FBI friend to look into what nut is sending her kooky email about him.
She didn't want to bother Patreaus with it, because for all she knew, this was completely her problem (stalker nut), not his.
That way they could write and share email "drafts" without ever having to send them (and expose them).
Petraeus would write and save a draft without sending it...Broadwell would read the draft intended for her and delete it and write her own draft for P4.
But then Broadwell screwed up by sending a real email to Jill Kelley.
She might have just decided she didn't want to worry Petraeus.
Dig that crazy eye treatment man!
I know more than a few FBI agents. Even known some SAIC's.
My first reaction is that the agent needs to have his azz kicked for releasing any information on an ongoing FBI investigation.
My second reaction is that I know of no agent of any kind that would go out on such a limb. They are ALL very sharp and very well educated people. Doing something like this especially since it leapfrogs over the chain of command is suicide to a field agent or even an SAIC.
Either the agent is not as smart as the ones I know or there is something pretty weird happening. This is all VERY strange.
It was an anonymous gmail account.
110th Congress
Reichert was a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, the Subcommittee on Border Maritime and Global Counter-terrorism, and the Ranking Minority Member on the Subcommittee on Intelligence Information Sharing and Terrorism Risk Assessment. He was a member of the House Committee on Science and Technology. Also, he was a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, with membership on the Subcommittee on Aviation and Subcommittee on Highways and Transit.[14]

for the love of Pete is right!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“But then Broadwell screwed up by sending a real email to Jill Kelley” >p>
So Broadwell accidently sent a response to Kelley using that same account that she and Petraeus were using incognito and the FBI discovered their identities by monitoring the account? The FBI simply monitored it until more emails began on the account and then discovered that one of the persons using this account just happened to be the CIA director, Petraeus, right?
Broadwell's stupidity brought down the house of cards.
Ok next question. How difficult is it to get the FBI to monitor an average citizen’s email for threatning messages?
“Sounds strange! Kelley and her husband supposedly are very close friends to Petraeus and yet, she does not mention this to Petraeus but goes straight to her FBI friend. Does not make sense?”
Had this same question as soon as the name “Kelley” was revealed. According to a report, Jill Kelley was not only personal friends with both Holly & David, they VACATIONED together!
WSJ says Petraeus’ name was never mentioned in the threatening emails. Kelley had no suspicion that emails involved Petraeus? Even so, she had no conversation with him about them? Maybe. Same WSJ article says Kelley received 5-10 emails beginning in May.

NOW, not only are we told that the FBI agent whom Kelley contacted is a personal friend of her’s, but the very same agent is also the whistleblower who contacted GOP congressman Dave Reichert.
The questions pile up in the Petraeus affair and lead us further away from Benghazi...unless and until Petraeus testifies-—or a further Benghazi scandal involving Petraeus erupts, which it might, according to Broadwell’s father. SHEESH!!!
‘The truth will come out’: Father claims her affair is part of bigger scandal [Petraeus]

This “agent” may *not* be a Special Agent of the F.B.I. Some employees of the F.B.I. have become careless with how they address people and describe their duties as employees of the F.B.I.
Several of them are assistants to Special Agents, and I had to question one such assistant, reminding her of that, when she called somebody and insisted on saying, “This is the F.B.I., and we have some questions for you.”
As you know, there is a precise series of steps by which a Special Agent *must* identify his or her self. The movies and TV shows generally are terrible at portraying that moment.
Some *assistants* seem to have gotten their “license” from such media.
Thanks. I find it hard to keep track of the details sometimes. And occasionally I find myself going down the wrong rabbit trail; I can usually count on my FR friends to reel me back in.
