"...Gerry Mak and Sarah Magida sauntered through a small ethnic market stocked with Japanese eggplant, mint chutney and fresh turmeric...Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate...shes used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away..."

“Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate...”
Well, there you go.
So, how was he surviving before food stamps?
RED DIAPER DOPER BABIES
Foodstamps for hipsters is commonplace. What’s most amazing about this story is SALON is still publishing.
Is it the proposal to cast this former taxpayer out on the street to starve now that we can't suck more taxes out of him?
They’re young, they’re broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that?

Have you purchased butter lately? It's approaching $4.00. And if that's fresh tarragon, it's certainly not in my budget.
Sure. The same way Obastard "toiled" at community agitating. It's hard work.
Somehow I don't think Mark was "toiling" at changing plates, refilling ink or changing 5 ton rolls of paper in the pressroom.
Steak costs more, and hamburger, though available at lower price, doesn't go as far as salmon.
I shop at ALDI ~ along with the welfare mothers and hootchie mommas.
It doesn’t sound like he “fell” on hard times. It sounds like he “sauntered” over to them, leaving a job behind (working is so 20th century) and discovered that not working is quite satisfying as long as others pay to support him.
Did Gerry Mak and Sarah Magida, happen to tell you to get the hell off the computer and get back to work so they can eat better?
Assuming you need to buy this stuff in a store is probably wrong with the former taxpayer. He was surviving somehow ~ and he may have turned to urban farming.
From the USDA website : Thirty-five states have abolished asset test
Households may have $2,000 in countable resources, such as a bank account, or $3000 in countable resources if at least one person is age 60 or older, or is disabled. However, certain resources are NOT counted, such as a home and lot..
So just go spend down your bank account and buy some 22” spinner rims for your Escalade, and you’ll be fine.
Being a pressman is not exactly ‘publishing’ ~ it’s more a vanishing semiskilled trade ~ the whole printing industry is going down the tubes
What a retarded question! You must be a liberal. Only a liberal would seriously think that this guy has only two options:
1. Starvation; or,
2. Insist that us taxpayers buy him organic salmon, fresh turmeric, triple-creme cheese, and organic asparagus.
F**K THAT GUY! Anyone on aid who acts like that doesn’t need the help.
I will never sign up for government benefits. I know it’s an old-fashioned artifact these cynical post-modern days, to be sneered at as being stupid, not taking what’s there to be had, but there is such a concept as honor. Useless, outmoded, almost a luxury item now, if there was a market for such a useless thing.
I probably met their Dad on a chair lift in the Sierras in 1975. The guy next to me on the lift was bragging about how he worked only enough in the fall to buy a new pair of skis, boots and season pass. In the spring, he worked just enough to buy a new surfboard. He lived on welfare during the skiing and surfing season. At the time, I was working 60 to 80 hour weeks. I still have dreams of pushing the bastard off the chair when we were about 150 ft off the ground.

I would tell Mak that I suggest that Atlas should shrug, go get his EBT card and Obamaphone head out to Colorado where he can smoke a joint while waiting in line for his Obamacare doctor to put him on permanent Social Security Disability after that he can head out to Washington State and marry his life partner Hercules where they can raise their eugenically created daughter Julia as a slave to government programs and assistance perpetuating the cycle of dependency.
