I am a master of my own destiny – NOT a domesticated house pet.

I am a Ron White example of “you cannot fix stupid”. Throughout my life I have made many financial mistakes. Academic background does not make you intelligent, just gives you the illusion of intelligence sometimes. I have reached SS retirement age and will have to depend on the government for my retirement funds. I earned it by paying into the system for near 50 years and now I will collect a little for hopefully a few years. All the mistakes I made were made by me, not someone else making my life decisions for me. I cannot understand how some can live as lap dogs. Lay around and not even make an attempt to earn a living on their own. Like a pet house dog, just lay around and lick their nuts while they wait on their next meal from the “Master of the House”. In this case the government. Some citizens do require legitimate financial help such as the physically or mentally disabled, unwanted children, and elderly unable to work. But the others should be required to do some work if nothing more than sweeping the streets of your town before they collect from the tax payers. Reform the current Welfare System NOW. My grandchildren will not be able to pay for all of this Vote Buying crap.. It will not be long and the "Master of the House" will be making ALL of our life decisions whether we agree or not

Social Security Insurance = “Welfare.”

Nice.

Nice.

For anyone collecting it now, certainly. They were taxed, yes, but there is no property right in SS 'contributions'. That is the language of political sophistry (see: Flemming v Nestor), for every dime collected and more was spent as soon as it was collected.

Do you think paying the sales tax on a pack of gum entitles a bum to welfare payments, since he 'paid in'?

Those paying SS taxes have generally been paid out more than they paid in, from current taxpayers. Future 'contributors' (born after approximately 1975) can't even expect their collections to exceed their 'contributions'. Before even factoring inflation it will be a loss. Factoring inflation and lost investment revenue it is disastrous for the retirement of those born after 1975.

SSI is a mechanism for creating dependency and political loyalty by destroying the ability of the poor and middle class to effectively save for their own retirement. It was dressed in the language of 'insurance' to placate those who were instinctively suspect of a government promise to tax them today and take care of them tomorrow. Unlike real insurance, which procures income generating assets as well as other stable, long term investment, to pay claims, the government just spends every dime collected and promises to issue more debt in the future to cover it.

It is a welfare system, designed (by accident or intent is irrelevant to the outcome) to reduce the individual's ability to save, and help ensure their dependency, fear, and political loyalty.

Those who plan to retire on SSI plan to retire on the mercy of politicians promising to plunder future generations. Calling it 'welfare' is generous.

I’m a retired vet rated 30% disabled. The VA takes 30% of my gross retirement pay which is given back untaxed.

I don’t see how this is being given “welfare” since all I’m getting is my retirement pay.

My father faced the same nonsense until his disability exceeded 50%, that's apparently the threshold at which they quit reducing your disability payment from your income.
