Kate Smith sings "God Bless America" for the first time on the radio in 1938Kate is fibbing a bit in the introduction. Irving wrote it for his Army talent show "Yip Yip Yaphank" in 1917. (It's pronounced YAP-hank.) He put it in the desk drawer and pulled it out for Kate in 1938, but he didn't write it specifically for her. This version has the vocal intro that is very rarely heard in performance.

Must retire an early call awaits me in the morning! No weekends at Castle MacNessa! We are at 100%, 24/7!
The Bugler, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.
Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!
Good night, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!
Godspeed our Troops around the Globe especially those in harms way by virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to live in Freedom!

I've been looking for a new project, but I've drawn a blank, unless people are interested in Stephen Foster. His songs are being taken seriously today.
