It was the worst of times and the worst of times.
With the 2012 election results in, there are no short- or even medium-term "silver linings" for Republicans.
President Barack Obama has won a decisive victory and the GOP, expecting to gain Senate seats, actually had a net loss of three.
The "morning after" will bring the expected explanations and after-game quarterbacking. Still, it is important that the GOP understand why we lost this one in hopes of future victory.
Perhaps the easy explanation is that two hurricanes and two betrayals by Chris Christie killed Mitt Romney's chances.
The first hurricane was Isaac, the one that skirted Tampa in late August during the Republican convention. That one seriously disrupted the official schedule.
GOP star Marco Rubio who gave the best speech of the convention was bumped off prime-time TV coverage, and so was the video biography "introducing" Mitt to the nation.
Aging actor Clint Eastwood was scrambled into the schedule to offer a funny but often incoherent monologue with an empty chair. He stole Mitt's show. And prime-time keynoter Chris Christie barely mentioned the nominee or Obama in a speech that sounded like the New Jersey governor was pumping his re-election.
The ground lost in Tampa wasn't regained until the first debate in Denver, when Romney shined. It was the first, best, and last time he would really sparkle.
As a result of the debates, by late October polls showed that Romney was finally beginning to see a surge.
Then the second hurricane, Sandy, struck on Oct. 29. The campaign went into freeze mode while Obama swung into commander in chief mode. Romney's surge was suddenly frozen too.
Enter Iago.
It was perfectly fine for Chris Christie to join with Obama in the wake of the crisis. But...

just the opposite in my POV- 9-11 united the nation...last night will divide it even more...
quick question as i went to bed early last night and have not dared turned on the news today- how many senate seats will the GOP have come last January, 2013???
“Time to be done with the agonizing and go to underground warfare.”
Agreed.
I must confess that every time I see some scumbag standing in line at the grocery store with an EBT card in their hand (My damn money that they have taken without my consent!) I think of ripping it out of their mitts and breaking it in half. Wonder what I’d be charged with?
Oh well, just a dream, anyway.
America lost & People who hate America are the ones running her now.
“The moochers now outnumber us.”
And don’t believe the myth of social liberal/fiscal conservatives. They want everyone to pay for their abortions and drugs.
This conservative didn’t want Obama or Romney.
I see you've proudly spent that 30 pieces of silver your "principles" were worth........what did it buy you?
Mine weren't for sale.
BTW, did you feel respected by the GOP this morning?
And that's what liberal conservatives, or is it conservative liberals, or whatever. That's what the GOP (and apparantly many freepers) can't seem to understand.
When GW ran for a second term, we held our noses while we voted. Then came McLame and we did the same.
It's over. No more liberals in conservative's clothing.
Mitt Romney lost becaue he was a milk sop. He had multiple handles he copuld have pulled which would have revealed a traduced treasonous presidency to the public. Yet he pulled none of them. To bad.
Now the Republic is a risk. Gentlemen finish last, and the strategy of moderation to attract independents was a losing strategy again, something that John McCain also showed us all. Sarah Palin would have won this election, but the GOP would not embrace her, because she acted in the past to clean up the corruption of the Republican party in Alaska.
Too bad GOP. You lose, and perhaps the GOP is now dead. If not dead, it should be.
There were many reasons we lost but this is one of them. Republicans are the "Daddy" party. We impose unwanted discipline that sometimes hurts. Dims are the "Mommy" party. They wipe away tears, give hugs and are generous with candy. A spoiled, child-like culture that's been conditioned to self-indulgence will always vote for hugs and candy.
Romney lost because he was a GOP liberal running against a Dim liberal.
Given that choice the American electorate will chose the Dim liberal every time.
The so called “conservative” party needs to run conservatives if it expects to win elections in the future.
Obama got 9.35 million less popular voters than he did in 2008. That is a net loss of 13.4 %. Romney got 2.5 million less votes than mccain did in 2008.That is 4.2% Media and pundits are talking about religion, race, free stuff, etc...
There were approx. 11.85 million less votes cast in this election. It shows a lot of crossover vote but it also shows that neither side turned out to vote. For the R’s, you get what you ordered. Couldn’t be bothered to vote. Now you are on the road to extinction.
Romney then gets exposed as privately besmirching 47% of Americans... Romney was a horrible moderate candidate.
You are assuming that the majority want a conservative. They don't, they want their free stuff.
Good points, but none correct. Mitt lost because there are now more of them (socialists/takers) than there are of us (capitalist/makers). It is simple, also the definition of a socialist country...which is what we woke up to this morning.
he lost...pretending as all RINO’s do..they all he had to do was the RINO thingy a little bit better than the current crop of socialists/communists....and maybe everyone would say how wonderful he was ...
And the majority lived in big cities. Shows where support is from those who need government and not self reliance. Just wait until the big one hits and see how popular Obamaqabe will be.
ps - I had Obamagabe in my dictionary and it’s suddenly removed.
You are right, this is a trend, we have more voters that expect freebies. It is that simple. they are going to be surprised.
By now I guess you’ve learned we still have the house but the senate is still Dem controlled.
Obamamugabe
Romney lost because he’s a liberal. He tried to masquerade as a “severe” conservative, but nobody bought the act. In other words, he was blatantly inauthentic.
But but... Ann Coutlter promised he was a severe conservative. How could he be otherwise? /sarc
its been that way since 2011 but i was wondering what the official number of GOP seats in the senate will be come Jan 2013....
