NEW YORK (WLS) - A coalition of women and nonwhites helped re-elect President Obama to a second term Tuesday night.
Obama has always performed better with women than with men, and with nonwhites than with whites. But on Tuesday night, those numbers were so much in his favor that they built Obama a powerful firewall against a dropoff in support from white men and independent voters.
Nonwhite voters turned out to vote in higher numbers than ever. They made up 21 percent of all voters. In 1996, they were just 10 percent.
That new bloc was evident in Florida, the perennial swing state that was thought to be in Mitt Romney's corner. Hispanics came out in force for Obama, in greater numbers than in 2008 when Obama beat John McCain among Hispanics in Florida 57 to 42 percent. On Tuesday, he beat Romney among Hispanics 60 to 39 percent.
And as the country tinted blue for the second presidential election in a row, it also got a little less white.

Two words... Court Packing.
If the Dems nominate any more justices, just pack the court in 2017.
Except that now with a “mandate” and having extended his hand “across the divide” to Romney, Obama will be able to portray and try to marginalize the conservative House as obstructionists even more so than before.
Guess who winds up with the blame as things inevitably tank?
What exactly has the GOP done to combat illegal immigration? Reagan granted amnesty and Bush 41 did nothing. I thought after 9/11 Bush 43 would have at least sealed the borders, but no.
Big business loves cheap labor and the GOP is the party of big business. All the years of the GOP accepting bribes from big business (in the form of campaign donations) have now come back to create serious trouble for the party.
Raising a cild without a father has become a noble undertaking and to say otherwise is treasonous...
the destruction of the family unit will become the destruction of the civilized world....we are well underway.
Then maybe you republicans should stop creating so many single mothers.
There will not be any court-packing in 2017 or any other time.
The only hope is to slow-walk all judicial appointments and make the Supreme Court confirmations as lengthy as possible.
Delay is the only game the GOP has in the Senate right now.
Simple review of the census will point out why!
nice try...but I’m not easily hoodwinked
of course people who get married will have higher divorce rates than people that do not....duh
yes sad but true. there was a time when it even out because married women voted more conservative but hey who is married any more? the government has worked hard to destroy the family in order to have all the minorities and females depend on them as big daddy/husband for help. And at the same time push overly sexual behavior to insure illegitimate kids, abortion, and free birth control remain an big concern for these single females.
It’s not just illegal immigration but LEGAL immigration as well. Republicans have done nothing since 1965 when Ted Kennedy pushed through the Immigration Act and set the ball rolling for an eventual non-white America.
This woman agrees with you, RightOnline. Every tenet of the “enlightenment” has brought us to this sorry state of affairs.
Supporting our men does not mean shoving our way to the front & taking over.
(What a MESS!)
“2) Surprisingly Republican turnout was not that great.
Romney lost OH by 100K votes. PA by 250K or so. FL will be loss of about 10K more or less.
I was always given the impression by Rove, Morris, Barone, and other conservative pundits ( and even Rasmussen ) that the GOP enthusiasm was GREATER than the Democrats and turnout would be great. Not so.”
it was not just those guys....most on Freep understandably thought there would be a larger turnout by the GOP- hence the reason we thought the polls were skewed...
“3) Obama lost over 4 million votes from 2008 and STILL WON.”
i actually believe that number is more like 7 million less votes...he got 66mill in ‘08 compared to barely 59mill last night...GWB received more votes in ‘04 than obama last night...
“4) The final Rasmussen Poll had a D+2 turnout model. It looks like for each point the Dems were over D+2, one point went to Obama (if Rasmussens turnout model is correct ).”
bottom line is all these predictions and hopes of a large GOP turnout were false- another case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...if the GOP came out in force and voted, Romney is president today regardless of the number of women and minorities who voted for the POS in the WH...
Thread also could be titled:
Obama’s winning coalition of two groups that the founders never intended to vote.
But of course, we can’t remember those parts of history. only the PC parts.
The coalition of the racists and the stupid won last night.
They are in the majority.
And the rest of us will have to suffer because the GOP establishment insisted on pimping on us a liberal, me too horrible candidate who agreed with the Democrats on everything.
America didn’t get a real choice last night. It never had one.
My sainted grandmother used to talk about America rejecting God and the consequences.
50 years hence, America has a profound moral problem. Could there be a connection?
No, the winning coalition consisted of the badly misinformed, the dangerously naive, the fundamentally stupid, and the flat out corrupt. That combo crosses racial and gender lines.
There is no way the GOP should be losing the Asian vote. Asian immigrants are very entrepreneurial and usually very conservative socially, making them a group ideally suited for the Republican party. If the GOP can’t connect with them, then they have serious issues. One of the reasons why the Canadian Conservative party has been so successful in recent years has been its ability to make inroads with the east and south asian communities, by recruiting candidates and emphasizing small government, lower taxes and support for small business.
