Redskins lose to Panthers, Redskins Rule says Mitt Romney will be President

Months after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney joked about rising oceans and suggested FEMA should be privatized, he got some much-needed good news Sunday, two days before the nation goes to the polls to decide the next Commander-in-Chief: The Carolina Panthers won.

Romney, who was born in Michigan and was once the governor of Massachusetts, doesn't have any ties to the Charlotte area. But he's certainly well aware of the Redskins Rule. Specifically: Going back to 1940, a Redskins victory in their last home game before the election has meant the party currently in power remained in power 17 of 18 times. With a Redskins loss on Sunday to the Panthers, that portends good things for Romney's political future.

The one exception came in 2004, when the Redskins lost to the Packers but George W. Bush was re-elected.

Not to worry, Romney supporters. Elias Sports Bureau's Steve Hirdt can explain the one-time anomaly:

"I went back and studied the ‘Redskins Rule' data and what happened in 2004 was explained in 2000," he told ESPN's Front Row last week. "Because Al Gore actually won the popular vote in 2000 -- but lost in the Electoral College -- it reversed the polarity of the subsequent election. The opposite of the usual 'Redskins Rule' was true.

"Redskins Rule 2.0 established that when the popular vote winner does not win the election, the impact of the Redskins' game on the subsequent presidential election gets flipped. So, with that, the Redskins' loss in 2004 signaled that the incumbent would remain in the White House."

Well, the Redskins did their part! I would have rather seen them win, but you could say they took one for the country.

Liberals are not happy about this story. I think they know that the Redskins rule is going to apply. We’re going to win!

Cam Newton didn’t deserve the Heisman with his laptop stealing background, but I will give him props for this one LOL

I had a wing-nut tell me that Bush stole Ohio in 2004, so Kerry really won. They even cited the Redskins rule! So Romney is a shoe in! 100% accuracy!

A two-fer... Romney wins and Redskins lose! (A three-fer if it includes RGIII getting sacked 4 times)

I had a feeling the Panthers would win, for reasons that have nothing to do with the election. I thought Carolina would respond with a good game after almost winning in Chicago and while the Redskins are the better team, they’re not that much better.

Some say Gore winning the popular vote in 2000 messed up the mystical mojo so the “rule” still holds despite Bush’s 2004 win.

The rational part of the brain knows this is nonsense but it’s fun. Like that German octopus that predicted the world cup and got death threats from angry and hungry Germans when it predicted Germany would lose.

Heard Rush Limbaugh talk about this "Redskins Rule" on his show today. It's actually a very strange occurrence, occurring with about the same probability as flipping a coin 18 times and getting 17 heads or 17 tails.

Wonder why Redskins' road games aren't included in this when they played on the road the Sunday before the election. Probably because there is nowhere near the same unlikely correlation.

BTW, I think there was once a correlation between the outcome of the Super Bowl (according to whether the AFC or NFC team wins) and the presidential election, and also one between the outcome of the World Series (according to which league won) and the presidential election. Don't recall the details, though.

I agree with him on 1 thing, Bears have the best D in the NFL.

Romney interviewed as well, but I know that sack of crap Chris Berman wants Obama to win.

If wanted to see Bronco Bama and Glove Romney I wouldn’t be watching FOOTBALL.

Eagles suck. Reid gonna canned after this year?

Thanks justiceseeker93. These “indicators” are bogus of course, but amusing. Since there’s no conceivable credible connection between the outcome of a football game and election turnout and results, it’s fourth and long for Zero and his cadre.

After we’ve retaken our country, we won’t have a prop POTUS who gets all his plays called in from the sidelines.
