Thousands of people lined up to receive 11,000 gallons of free "Obama Gas," being distributed by the military at the Bedford Avenue Armory in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
The frenzy for gas, fueled by long lines and shuttered stations, reached a fever pitch Saturday even as a massive tanker full of relief sailed into the harbor. The interminable delay stretched to 16 hours at one Bay Ridge gas station, where would-be customers sat helplessly. Not even the promise of $10 in free FEMA gas calmed tensions in one tense 12-block queue along Bedford Ave. in Brooklyn, where tempers flared as desperate drivers tried to jump to the front.
People have been cutting the line like crazy, and theres nothing you can do about it, said Adam Brahimaj, 24, after sitting in his car for three hours. He started the day by bicycling to seven shuttered stations with a gas can in tow before the free fuel arrived.

It’s free. Just saying average income 65k getting free frozen water.
Like getting free coffee in Beverly hills.
Only difference is ice couldn’t be purchased because no one had power to make it. My freezer at home would make ice if there was electricity .
Just wondering what NYC people need gasoline for.
Oh I thought you meant if you made over 65K it wasnt free
or you would not get it.
That picture says it all.
This is Obama "cutting through red tape."
This is the kind of idea a sixth grader, or a community organizer, would think up. This guy can't organize his way out of a paper bag.
Hey Obama, I have a start-up solar company that I'd like to sell you.
I think this was a general “Free Stuff” line and not just gasoline.
In this photo, I see one individual with a container, not an approved gas container, but a container.that is usually used for water or coins. I live in Fl. I have 10 five gallon fuel containers in my shed, along with 10 one gallon containers. I also have two 5 gallon diesel containers. When they start yelping about a storm, I start filling. i also stock water for jobs. I buy gallon and 16 oz bottle’s. I rotate my stock. I pay 79 cents for a gal/of water, .07 cents per gallon in a case of 16 oz bottle’s. I maintain 50 gal. in stock (for two), that we rotate out, on the job. I also have a well on my property that feeds a 500 gal. holding tank. i understand that city folk have space constraints, however, water is life.
Obamagas! Love the guy with the culligan water container....
Do you think those are car owners in that photo? I don’t.
Allowing the market to establish a price (the market clearing price) is what’s needed. It’s very, very unlikely that the price would rise to anywhere near $15.00/gal, in this case.
The FEMA trucks are able to get into the area with the “free” Obama gas — so, obviously, there are no logistical barriers to resupply. It’s a matter of allowing the retail price to rise enough to cover all of the costs of doing business. A somewhat higher cost for trucking in the gas; perhaps an additional cost for generators to pump the gas out of storage — if that added more than $3.00/gallon, I’d be surprised.
OTOH, force retailers to take even a tiny loss on sales, and the smart ones will simply go on holiday.
Gas can come out of crack. =) sorry I could not resist.
I never imagined that many people owned gas cans. Nor have I ever imagined that many people owned generators. I assume that’s where most are using the gas.
...Molotov cocktails...
That picture says they thought they were giving
away free gas CANs too.
This crowd looks like a photo shoot for the Zombie Apocalypse.
Waiting for the fires to start.
Drive-by shootings must be down ...
Has anyone heard even a peep about the lack of response by King Obama?
I haven’t.
Many of them are, many of them are there just for arbitrage.
Many stations near me have plenty of gas, but power to pump it has not yet been restored.
Hoodies are also proof of need.
