New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie spoke Friday afternoon and said the state was inching closer to normalcy following the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.
But things seemed far from normal after the governor issued a gas rationing system to ease the strain several hours later.
Starting at noon Saturday, New Jersey will move to an odd-even gas rationing system in 12 counties.
Christie ordered the odd-even system to help ease fuel shortages and extended lines for gasoline that have occurred since the superstorm decimated the coast earlier this week.
Residents with license plates ending in an odd number can make gas purchases on odd-numbered days. Residents with plates ending in an even number will be able to buy gas on even-numbered days, the governor said.

After what I've seen for the last few days, I'm now convinced that a hurricane is the worst type of disaster a region like this can face. The biggest problem is that unlike other major disruptive events, things kind of seem normal enough after a day or two that people and businesses start functioning as if there is nothing wrong even while receovery efforts have barely started. A major blizzard would be the exact opposite case, since there is no way in hell anything can possibly seem "normal" while there is still two feet of snow on the ground and cars stranded in snowdrifts all over the place.
Hey, he is a politician (surely you know what they are like) and he is doing his current job! If you really want him to be a Republican or a Tea Party fellow, you need to either follow him and his statements or disown him and get on with life. He is not your understanding Tea Party fellow - but he is a good politician! Understand the difference and allow for same.
Politicians suck up to Power, Fame, and Votes. Anything else is just a coincidence. Print it on a label and show people that you care.
I think Tsunamis are probably the worst type of disaster. As bad as this is, a massive surge of 50’ from the other side of the Atlantic could wipe half or more of those states off the surface of the earth.
Look at the deaths in the Indian Ocean from the tsunami out there.
It makes our hundred or so look very small in comparison.
The damage here is widespread too though.
Right — I should have been more clear. A tsunami isn’t something that this region has ever had to deal with, at least not in recent millenia. I’m thinking more along the lines of the things we’ve dealt with periodically in the Northeast ... weather, blackouts, etc.
That’s actually dang creepy! Kinda funny but really creepy. Creepy, just like Republican politcians talking like smarmy Obamazoids and creepy like the (Jimmuh) Carter episode of the Twilight Zone :-/
No gas for vanity plates?
They're considered "odd". (No, really.)
“Proof that Christie is far more interested in winning his own upcoming election than in the well being of this nation.”
Christie was elected to represent NJ, and he is doing that. When you’ve waited over 4 hours for gas, let me know - this situation is untenable. Nothing can function if people can’t get to work, to the store, to school (we still have mass transit out of service); it is crazy here.
Tsunami would be bad. Not going to look it up but from memory there’s some volcano near Easter island that if sunk would wipe out entire east Coast US as far west as Ohio .
Emp’s have 900 mile radius?
Also there’s some super volcano out Midwest somewhere that would be catastrophic to entire US.
And no major catastrophies our side of the galaxy. Billions of years and Earths axis just happens to maintain an exact axis required to support life. And several galaxies including our own have a black hole at the center that apparently does no harm.
I understand your emphasis, and it’s completely reasoned.
The only reason I mentioned the tsunami, was that I saw a program addressing an island in the Southern Eastern Atlantic that faces New England and has the potential to be a big problem.
Half the island could break off. It’s had parts break off before, and there’s a fissure or indicator that goes through the middle of it.
As you state, it has been dormant for a long time. You just wonder sometimes.
Take care...
I just had a friend who is a zero supporter slobbering on Facebook about how zero will “continue to do so much good whenever he leaves the White House”...
Vomit. All I could picture was Jimmah Carter sticking his nose into international affairs for.ev.er.
God help us.
That super volcano is up at Jellystone. ;^)
It would be catastrophic.
It’s actually hard to fathom the size of the crater up there.
Luckily it has been dormant for along time too. Hopefully all these will remain so.
“Well, as a short-term emergency measure, IMHO this actually may not be a bad idea. Many people are buying out of genuine need, but I’m sure there’s also some “panic buying”, the way we saw people lining up for gas on 9/11 for fear of a spike in gas prices. If the order can ease that a bit until the gas stations start getting resupplied on a regular basis and the ones without power get their pumps working again, it might make the situation a little easier to handle in the meantime. “
Suppose you’ve got two days worth of gas left when you wake up this morning, but today’s your day to buy. This system forces you to buy gas today, rather than wait till tomorrow.
***
If they let the stations charge whatever they want, we might be better off. If I had to pay 10 or 20 bucks a gallon, I wouldn’t waste gas on discretionary driving. If I could make a fortune delivering gas around here, maybe I’d do this for a couple of weeks. Maybe there’s a faster way to sell the gas, but at a few cents per gallon of profit, no one’s going to bother.
Instead, the government is going after a few “gougers”.
Super volcano jelly stone . Should have remembered that. Never been there. Just the one at Disney world ‘76.
Fair point.
Christie has pulled himself together a little. After all his tough talk he folded like a little girl at the first crisis.
Lord have mercy!
