It's just too tempting to compare the media response to government relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the response to Sandy. The dichotomy is stark.
ABC News:
*****
The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.
"We're going to die! We're going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!" Donna Solli told visiting officials. "You don't understand. You gotta get your trucks down here on the corner now. It's been three days!"
Staten Island was one of the hardest-hit communities in New York City. More than 80,000 residents are still without power. Many are homeless, and at least 19 people died on Staten Island because of the storm.
*****
Three days after Katrina, New Orleans Mayor Nagin was on the radio, literally weeping about the lack of federal response to the desperation of the city:
*****
"You know the reason why the looters got out of control?" Nagin said. "We have most of our resources saving people. They were stuck in attics, man, old ladies. You pull off the doggone ventilator and look down and they're standing there in water up to their fricking neck."
"I need reinforcements," he said. "I need troops, man. I need 500 buses."
The relief efforts made so far had been "pathetically insufficient," Nagin said.
"They are thinking small, man, and this is a major, MAJOR deal," Nagin said. "God is looking down on this and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price. Every day that we delay, people are dying, and they're dying by the hundreds, I am willing to bet you."

Well, duh, they gave out a web address for those who need help.

Too busy blocking non-union power help.
Well at least Obama walked through and had his ass kissed before heading out to Las Vegas.
By the way, where is Wide Load today?
Does anyone recall if SI was under a manditory evac before Sandy hit ? It sure falls under Zone A catagory. Did they ignore the order ?

It’s Bush’s fault.

FEMA Fail
Interesting trivia is that we would have been the 22 largest city in the US at the time.
The reason the movement started in the first place was because the City Charter was rewritten by State Supreme Court mandate to have proportional representation. Under the original City Charter (Where the city of Richmond) which joined all 5 Burroughs gave equal representation for each one. Basically we got screwed from 20% say in governing the city to less than 5% say. Things have gone down hill ever since.
Of course not; they are just a "bump in the road" to him.
Staten island votes republican and the government is democrat. Does that answer their question?
Here’s the deal. When you have an event like this....you need to appoint a two-star Marine general to walk in...with 20k National Guard and active-duty personnel, and take charge for thirty days. You establish five or six tent cities and you have MPs who are armed and prepared to take down any looters in the ‘zone’. FEMA....is worthless. FEMA probably works ok if you had a tornado, or some flood....but in this case...they can’t do the job, period. Let the general report only to the President, and make this all simple.
It’s a shocking revelation...
Here everyone thought electricity came from pixy dust inside the wall outlet and powered all things laudable like cell phones, I-pods, Chevy Volts, etc..
Just wait til they here it comes from nuke and coal fired steam plants.
Interesting; thanks!
RE: OBAMA DOESNT LIKE WHITE PEOPLE.
If Bush had Kanye West as his tormentor, who does Obama have?
Per CBS, Neroberg decided to postpone the marathon.
Here in Long Island, there has been a quiet movement to SECEDE from the State of New York to form the 51st state of the United States ( bringing Obama’s dream of 57 states closer to reality ).
It has quite some support, especially from the more well to do folks living here.
How things have changed; in the 1906 San Fran earthquake the troops were ordered to shoot looters...
I's coming for all of us sooner or later (see: Greece) Prepare.
