Homes and businesses in the Lower East Side and East Village are still without power and under water. Residents began dumpster diving outside a Key Food supermarket Thursday, looking for whatever food they can take. Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

This is obviously photo shopped.

I know this because Obama appeared so presidential and did such a good job working so closely with whomever, and Chris Christie stood behind him shaking his head yes and without the federal government why we would have to find our food in garbage cans and...

Key Food supermarket had to toss some stuff because of the power outage.

Wouldn’t people take the stuff just because it is free?

I mean, the motivation is “free stuff” not starvation.

I don't understand how adults can be so unprepared for whatever life brings that they can't go a few days without stealing food from a Dumpster. Is this a northeastern lib mentality? Does no one keep canned foods and bottled water on hand, even when they KNOW a hurricane is coming?

They don't live in reality. I am upstate and I not only had plenty to last me a while (and normally do) but even my hunting camp had supplies for a few days. These people can't ride out a week long disruption, yet they hold the rest of the state hostage at the voting booth. Frustrating!

How do you starve after 48 hours?! If people were looking for free stuff out of dumpster, they’re dumb. Hop a bus up 1st ave to 35 street and find a Gristedes or a D’Agostinos. They have power. I’ve been w/o power since Monday but I have no problems. These morons want us to believe they can’t boil water to make pasta and heat a jar of Ragu. This is nuts.

95% of these people thought preppers were insane, last week.

I remember some bad times. I knew a donut shop owner and I knew exactly what time after they closed (noon-ish) they would be tossing a clear bag of leftover donuts and stuff out. lol. Only took advantage once or twice. Always wondered if they couldn't just donate it. They didn't throw out the leftover pig-in-blankets though, probably sold those elsewhere.

Hey, I do it every day. I even donated three times on a disposable CC, $ .10 each time. The fees are gonna hit hard (I hope they don't change!!!)!

Each time you process a credit or debit card transaction through your merchant account, you are charged an inquiry fee and a percentage of the total transaction. The inquiry fee is a flat amount, typically between 20 cents and 35 cents. The percentage charged, is typically called your "credit card rate" and it is variable based on the type of transaction and the type of card used.Credit Card Rates Explained

i have heard some cities do not allow donation of food like this to shelters because it hurts the self-esteem of the homeless who eat it. not satire.

I live in the Northeast and I have enough canned food and other non-perishable food items to last me until spring. I don't even consider myself a prepper either. My wife and I just like shopping at wholesale warehouses like Sam's Club and Costco where we can buy in bulk.
