U.S. Aircraft Carrier Spotted Off The Coast Of The Rockaways As Part Of Federal Response To Sandy November 1, 2012 3:38 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) An aircraft carrier was spotted 3 miles off the coast of the Rockaways on Thursday afternoon.
Chopper 2 saw the military vessel in the Atlantic Ocean, a part of the federal response to superstorm Sandy.
It is a hopeful sight for folks in Queens, who were among some of the hardest hit residents during the storm.
The presence of the naval ship means the helicopters circling our area to survey the damage and provide relief are self-sufficient. They will not have to visit nearby airports for fuel as they supply troops and manpower to the devastated residents in the Rockaways and the Tri-State area.

Ah—The aircraft carrier that should have been sitting off of the coast of Benghazi.
Something doesn’t ring quite right with that story?
All this election stuff is making me so cynical that my first thought is to wonder how many sailors are being disenfranchised by not being around to vote in their home port.
Nov. 7th can’t get here soon enough. I can’t think straight.
really? why? we don’t have the capacity to reach these areas from land-based assets? doesn’t make any sense unless it’s truly a PR move in light of the Benghazi situation.
Well, at least the won’t be voting in Virginia on Tuesday...
Hmm, I wonder if this carrier is there to really help those in true need or are they there to keep the people honest.
What’s an “aircraft carrier”?
The really odd thing about the story is, the Navy usually announces deployments like this, but they are reporting they think this is the mission because their helicopter “spotted” the carrier.
It's the least they could do for killing the XL pipeline.
Strange logistics, if the goal is to pick up troops and supplies on land and deliver them on land.
But, if it’s difficult getting auto gas, avgas or JetA has got to be even scarcer, so if fuel and a clear landing zone is the goal a carrier can certainly provide that. There are smaller ships that support copters, but if you have a carrier ready....
All Navy Ships have HUGE Generators and can supply a lot of Electricity, they have Evaps and can supply Fresh Water and they have Manpower to assist.
An Aircraft Carrier has Helicopters to deliver goods and Manpower to places that are cut off
The Navy can do a lot more than just blow up stuff
TT
They don’t even bother to figure out which aircraft carrier it was? Well, that is journalism these days for you...
Maybe it is a LHD flattop amphibious ship with helicopters and not a big CVN like the Truman. The reporters would not know the difference.
Exactly. While I'm thankful that folks in the NE are (hopefully) getting the much needed relief, it irks me to no end that our brave guys in Benghazi were abandoned, when help could have arrived in plenty of time.
Yeah, but those were remote third world areas with no innfrastructure and suffering real devastation after an actual cataclysmic natural disaster.
Here we’re talking about little Cat 1 storm and the biggest and most modern metropolitan area of the United States, with easy highway access to unaffected areas...and they need an aircraft carrier? It’s all part of the horse-and-pony show.
