NEW YORK (AP) Television networks offered compelling pictures and a gripping narration of the monster storm that put Monday on hold for millions of people in the eastern part of the country and more than a few mixed messages, too.
Anchors and reporters repeatedly urged viewers to stay at home and stay safe during the storm, yet they solicited pictures and videos to show evidence of Hurricane Sandy's might and displayed them on the air.
Reporters with rain dripping off their windbreakers expressed incredulity at civilians walking around outside, like when CNN's Ashleigh Banfield noted joggers at New York's Battery Park City.

“There’s the hot dog man. Hey, Hot dog man!” - Ashley Banfield
I don’t think the folks in Queens think it was an exaggeration - half of the borough looks like it’s on fire. At least 50 homes have been completely destroyed together in a few square block area, and it’s been raging since about 11:30 pm last night, and they can’t effectively fight it as the area is/was completely flooded.
I’m sure the others who have lost their homes to flooding and such don’t think it’s ridiculous either...
I wonder how many ended up stranded in the rising flood waters, and enclosing fire that acted like the folks who didn’t take the warnings seriously. It’s not just rain. Especially, not in an urban area.
Sorry, but after watching the coverage of the 6-alarm-fire I just watched, I think it was STUPID for people to second-guess the severity of this storm. God bless the FDNY who has been out in boats all night scaling walls to rescue people from FIRES as a result of the hurricane.
People never listen to safety announcements, they always think they know better and stay with possessions.
Exactly. These things are unpredictable. We got off easy it seems (we are 1 hr inland), but the coasts got hammered. NYC is going to wake up to a world of hurt. Whole towns on the shore went underwater. The ocean overran barrier islands and met the bay. And even out here people were killed by blown debris or falling trees. Try telling those people it was “hype”.
Time remaining until the storm is blamed on Global Warming:
7, 6, 5, 4, 3, ..........
No doubt that some are being hit with a complete calamity...and I pray for the safety of all involved.
However, in the midst of it, there is always levity. A few hours ago I was watching as one of the “on scene” reporters was encouraging people to get to the shelters. They wanted to make sure that the public was aware that the shelters would be welcoming family pets..so that they were not staying in unsafe conditions for that reason. He went on about this for quite some time...
...and at the end he said something along the lines of “of course, families will be bringing children as well...” LOL!
The way it came across was just hilarious...I was thinking of the parents leaving the house with the dog...out into the night calling out “Kids, we’re taking the dog to the shelter; be sure to stay in interior rooms on the second floor! We left Doritos & sodas on the landing for you...we’ll keep in touch via text once the dog is safe!”
Seems like the media are trying make this some kind of global community event where everyone from Albuquerque to Istanbul should be extremely concerned. I would not use the word “epic” in describing this storm but I’m hearing the media use it all too often.
Images I’ve seen of the storm from near-earth orbit make it look like it covers half the planet but it is really much smaller than that.
Way back about 1982 was the last time we had a residual hurricane "eye" pass through the neighborhood. Last night we went through the Southern edge of the "wind wall" twice ~ total silence except for the sirens denoting emergencies for somebody.
When it came to trees falling on power lines, Dominion Power had done a good job and cut down everything that could fall on a wire. Woke up this morning to a mere 178,000 customers (affecting about 1/2 million people) without power in the immediate area.
What I wonder is if the stop lights work, are the grocery stores open, can the doctors get to their offices, are the hospitals safe, etc.
We had 75 MPH "steady gusts" for a good 10 hours yesterday ~ and then 53MPH steady wind until about 3 AM. The silence woke me up ~ a mere 13 MPH wind doesn't make much noise.
I know already that the front of my house was hosed down like a commercial cleaning service had come through here. Even my front door has that new, fresh look ~ and the trees are now without leaves ~ so much for a colorful Fall.
As dawn breaks over Sandy’s wake, a whole new view of this catastrophe will slowly come into focus. Prayers up for our Country.
Where’s Looty with his Heinekens in all this?
While I am not trying to diminish the strength of the storm, I can’t help but believe that MANY in the media are not above the the “Don’t look at Libya - look at the storm!” approach to politics. This coverage takes attention away from Libya and will end up with them praising Obama for the “great” job he did in handling this disaster - I can already see it coming.
Probably because he pee'd his pants.
HAHAHAHHAHA!!! THAT was the FUNNIEST thing I’ve ever seen on TV!! Wonder where she is now.....NBC....CBS....MSNBC???
If it’s not one thing; it’s another.
HAHAHAHAH!!! OMG!!! PERFECT place for her...MSNBC!! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
Well put. I remember Hurricane Andrew where people immediately the next morning were remarking that it wasn’t so bad. You really won’t know how bad this was for a day or so after it’s over.
Romney’s fault.
That was in the past. It has already come up in various places.
